GEARHART MINE TRAIL OR UTE TRAIL: This is a short hike (about a mile). Continue on this trail to Gearhart Geo, Mt. Garfield Challenge Caches 3, 2 and 1 and a few others. At the top if you head towards the east there are a few more caches. You can make a full day of caching up on top.
DIRECTIONS: From Grand Junction, take I-70 east to the Palisade exit (#42), turn south on 37 3/10 Rd (Elberta) , travel to the first road on right (G 7/10 Road). This road will wind around private homes, stay to the right. Go through the small tunnel(I-70 underpass) to the trailhead. Park at coordinates N39 07.133 W108 23.325. Gearhart Mine trailhead is located east of the parking area - around the first hill slope- you'll see a trail headed up a rocky ravine- start there (about N39 07.141 W108 23.187). CAUTION: This trail is steep, rough and challenging. Footing is unstable and slippery, especially when wet. If you have a fear of heights USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT! I fell it's a bit easier BUT longer trail to Mt. Garfield summit.
That said, large groups of middle schoolers have taken the challenge along this trail year after year- with strict precautions about safety- keep one foot solidly on the ground at all times, no running (coming down can be more dangerous than going up- stay focused and in control), and be prepared (water, good shoes, sunscreen, hat) Carry plenty of water and some food- and a camera! Oh yeah... one more thing to bring... GNAT spray or something in the warmer months. Once you arrive on top - stop to enjoy the accomplishment -
First to get the cache go to N 39 07.630 by W 108 23.187 and suck it in. At this point use extreme CAUTION as you proceed.
As stated above the middle school trips up is where I first came across the sight. Take a moment a look at what around your feet after finding the cache.
Remember to check out the area and pick up a few other caches.
11/16/2018 By Booger81526 Cache was replaced. Thank you for your help CO BIO.
09/29/2018 By daveandkathy I looked at the CO profile and there has been no activity since 2015 so I am thinking that this cacher does no caching any more.
02/23/2017 By BG2015 Interesting that no one has chosen to log this in the last four years. I'm not afraid. But, like the last several searchers, I think this one is gone. GPS did not have me through the squeeze, but regardless, I looked on the shelf, through the squeeze, and all around outside the entrance. No cache to be found.
04/22/2013 By kateylady I was with another geocacher who has looked for it before here and it was impossible for us to find. The Lemon Squeeze was FUN however!
04/22/2013 By gjhiker Back again today with still no luck. Today we were able to get out to the ledge but could find no cache container either on the ledge, in the crack or around the entrance to the crack. Three of us looked for about 20 minutes. Originally looked all around on 4/15/2010 but no luck. At that time the crack was blocked by a chock-stone that would make it difficult to get back out so we didn't check out the ledge.
