Here's another viewpoint on a ridge above Waldo Canyon and revenge for all the other Knockoffs. *** Smile ***

*** As of June 22, 2018 Waldo Canyon Trail is NOT open to the public and the parking area along Hwy. 24 is blocked off. You will need to use your navigation skills to get to the cache. Ignore the reference points given until the trail is open to the public. ***
One way to do this cache is to park at the Waldo Canyon trailhead (N38 52.879 W104 56.967) on Hwy 24 and take the Waldo Canyon Trail to a trail junction at N38 52.882 W104 56.288. When you leave the Waldo Canyon Trail, the first 200-300 ft. is steep with gravel so boots might be helpful. This hike is about 1.6 miles one-way and about 930 ft. of elevation gain. This is the easy way and on trails, straight up the hill is the hard way (note that the "easy way" is NOT an easy hike).

The Waldo Canyon Trail is very popular so the parking area fills up fast in summer. Since this cache is up a ridge be aware of the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. It is a hot trail on a hot day, so take plenty of water.

It is a good idea to bring your own pencil or pen (BYOP).

Rattlesnakes are primarily down on the flatlands but have been spotted while hiking the Waldo Canyon Trail (rare) so be careful where you put your feet, hands, or sit down.

There are easy ways through the scrub oak and there are harder ways. Watch out for sharp points on yucca and cacti.

The coordinates 504953 4303997 (UTM) are an average of 36 readings with standard deviations of 1.8 and 1.9 meters respectively.

The opening in the outer shell goes down so it doesn't fill with water. The lid of the inner container goes in first so it will be up for best weather seal and the duck tape goes last to give people a handle to pull it out of the outer shell. Please note the position of the cache and return it as found unless it doesn't match the previous description. Thanks!

Some might rate the difficulty at 3.5.

Don't forget to log your DNF's. That's part of the fun. ** smile **

If you leave the trail at a bend, you can get to the cache with minimal contact with the scrub oak and other vegetation. Also you can proceed up the trail a short distance and curve around to the cache with minimal contact with the scrub oak and other vegetation; however, it's more circuitous and not as obvious how to get around the rocks.

See "Hiker's Rest Stop" for Geocaching "Additional Waypoints" and as mentioned above.

This one took a bit to find. Finally resorted to a paf to make the find. Last cache for us today. Wind was picking up so we were ready to head back. Sl, thanks!

Found on a beautiful day of hiking and great conversation with gampa&gamma! I've been meaning to explore the Waldo Canyon area for a while, and today was the day. My mom was unexpectedly in town for a little longer than anticipated, so she joined us, too...for an excellently tiring hike that ended up being longer than expected, as well (and uphill on the way back, even)! I thought we were only going for 4 (or maybe 8 caches if we were feeling it), but we got to GZs for 10! Along the way, my mom decided that she'd finally get her own geocaching account for all the traveling she does, too. We have a convert, haha! Gampa's eagle eyes spotted this one; thank you for placing this cache!

Thanks for the lonely cache!!! Today I needed to get out as I've been feeling pretty down. I've been eyeing these caches since the are "Opened" back up. I made a few quick stops before heading up the mountain. I approached all the ones I found today from below at one of the pull offs just past Waldo Canyon. It was a steep climb but I managed a good time up and around a large loop to find 7 and 1 DNF. This was my third stop and took much longer than the previous one. I went round and round this boulder, taking a break to climb the nearby boulder for some pictures. Then back to searching. found it after one more loop around! ha ha ha!! Signed the log and replaced as found! Awesome find! 6 years lonely and survived the fire!

I checked this cache June 20, 2018 and it survived the Waldo Canyon Fire (Yeaa!!!!). The general area is now open to the public but the Waldo Canyon Trail is still closed to the public. The parking area along Highway 24 is blocked off with concrete dividers.

So do not try to access this cache by the traditional route. I accessed it by coming down what is left of a social trail from Rampart Range Road. If you try to do it from Cascade, make sure you park in a legal fashion. Some parts of the social trail are intact and some overgrown, blocked by downed trees, or not visible at all.

I am still around, just haven't looked for caches in a long time.

I had three caches above Waldo Canyon. Hiker's Rest Stop II and Knockoff's Knockoff were not in a location where they were likely to burn but a water dump may have sent them down the mountain.

Howard's Rock, which you just archived, I suspect burned up. After the Forest Service opened the area for access, I went up to Rampart Range Road to hike down to the cache. The road was closed so I couldn't get close to an access point to hike down to the caches. One geocacher tried to get to Howard's Rock from Cascade but the parking there is not the best. You could get the locals mad.

Rampart Range Road is now open for the summer. I have intended to hike down and check all three caches. I just haven't had a chance yet.

Greetings,

We are doing a check of caches that have been disabled for an extended period. Please maintain this cache and post an appropriate note to the cache page.

As stated in the cache listing guidelines https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#listingmaintenance You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time - normally a few weeks - in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive or transfer the listing.

PLEASE NOTE:
Today's notice is a friendly reminder only. Do not reply to me directly. Rather, please LOG A VISIT on this cache page and WRITE A NOTE with a status update and any intention to revive the cache. Several reviewers participate in cache maintenance tasks so a log posted in this manner is the best way to get your message seen. Without a log posted you risk having the cache archived.

If you have disabled this cache for the winter or a season, please consider this a reminder to post a notice for when you expect the area to re-open. Re-activate the cache if the area is actually open again.

After you have checked on it and it's ready for seeking again, great! You can re-enable the cache page http://support.groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=235 by clicking the link under the cache name or by checking the box that says the cache is active. That will place it back in the review queue. You may also drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. If, however, you discover that the cache is missing and/or you decide not to replace it, then please remove any remaining pieces of it and archive it. This will open up the area for other geocachers to hide their own geocaches. You may also need to digitally relocate any trackable items still listed here. If a "Needs Maintenance" log was posted, you will also need to log an "Owner Maintenance" log to clear the "Needs Maintenance" icon from the geocache page. http://support.groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=404

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and I am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future. If the cache is not maintained or the status is not updated, it will be archived. Thank you for understanding.

If this sounds like an automated email template, that's because it is. I apologize for that but the volume of messages we get is such that templates like this make the process much more efficient. Thanks for your understanding.

I look forward to hearing from you. Do not reply to this email. It is sent by a no-reply mailbot so I won't get it. To respond, please do NOT send me an e-mail or a message center conversation as they lack needed functionality for reviewing. Leave a new "Reviewer Note" log here on your cache page. If you're not familiar with this process, see the instructions https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=97&pgid=74. I have your cache on my watchlist, and I will receive a notification when you write your note. All reviewer notes are deleted when your cache is published.

Additionally, please note that if I've not heard from you in 4 weeks, I may be forced to archive this cache. Don't let your cache get archived for non-communication

As of June 2018, Waldo Canyon Trail is closed to the public.

The area around the trail is now open to the public. I plan on checking whether or not this cache survived the fire. I hope to get to it soon, which means before July. I will access it from Rampart Range Rd. taking a route that was once a social trail.

Waldo Canyon was closed to the public from June 2012 (the fire) to Oct. 2017. Don't plan on any trail to get to the cache.

Please check on this geocache and update the status. Some areas that were previously closed due to the Waldo Canyon fire have been opened back up. You can find the latest map here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/psicc/alerts-notices
