Walking, running or biking along the path you notice a train on the tracks across the river, hugging the mountain side. Suddenly the train disappears, never to be seen in this area again! What you did not see was the tunnel that goes into the mountain and once the train enters the mountain it travels west around the bend, out of your site from this location. If you suddenly see a train appear out of nowhere, it is traveling east and emerging from the tunnel.
This micro cache is located in beautiful Glenwood Canyon along the Colorado River in the Horsebend area, directly across from the tunnel entrance or exit, depending on the travel direction of the train. You can not see the tunnel opening from this angle.
The area is part of the Glenwood Canyon recreational path (paved) and is used by walkers, runners, bicyclists, and fisherman. Near the cache location is a coverd picnic shelter but one must walk into the area. The picnic area has a sandy beach with a rock outcropping that provides a sheltered area for kids and dogs to play in the river. This is a great place to watch the rafters going down the river. Also in this area are Big Horn Sheep and they are frequently spotted near the path. From the Glenwood side, the cache is 1.35 mile from the gate. The No Name access to the cache is .55 miles from the gate at the bottom of the hill. BYOP, log only cache. Bring your camera, this is a beautiful location!
Did this used to be the guard rail for the old road into Glenwood? If you align yourself straight across from the entrance to the train tunnel, you should find the cache. Since this is a narrow river canyon, GPS is not exact.
08/06/2018 By chiquita's bunch After a delicious picnic lunch at the parking area, we headed out for a lovely 3+ mile walk. We enjoyed watching the rafters going down the river and saw bighorn sheep on the other side of the freeway. Quick find, first ones to sign the new log. TFTC
