Once you get to the area of this cache, it's easy to find. The challenge is in the routefinding to work your way to the general area and doing the confusing scrambling approach to reach the top of Cap Rock. Your reward is a spectacular view from a very remote and airy spot just a couple of miles into the Front Range from the plains at Palmer Lake.
The "Challenge" part of this Cap Rock Challenge is this: Go to the Safeway parking lot on Highway 105 in Monument CO and identify the white rock in the direction of the coordinates. If you can find your way to the top of Cap Rock and the cache with no further help, and you haven't been there before (and haven't used the "hint"), in 2.5 hours in summer, 3 hours in winter, go to O'Malleys in Palmer Lake and call me (Bob Hostetler at 719-488-8867) and I'll come to O'Malleys and buy you a couple of beers.

In winter, consider taking a pair of the little ice crampons used on icy trails--part of a rugged trail is north facing and gets quite icy.

The route involves hiking ranging from a road to a rough trail to an indistinct trail, then some significant scrambling thru huge rocks where some hikers may want a "spot" from a stronger scrambler/climber. No ropes are needed. Because of the risk of getting lost/hurt in a remote area of confusing rocks, I'd suggest doing this hike for the first time with two people minimum. Also, wear long, old pants you can tear up--both the vegetation and the rocks are quite scratchy.

The cache is under the only loose rock just west of the summit cap. It is a Crystal Light container with a few misc trinkets including a wine opener (in case you've brought a bottle of wine to enjoy with lunch on the top!).

Have fun and enjoy the routefinding and the view!

To make the routefinding much easier, consult the [rather long] "hint". Call me if you need further help finding the route.

 Hints

To get to the Palmer Lake Reservoir Trailhead, take Highway 105 from Monument toward Palmer Lake. As you approach Palmer Lake, turn left on S. Valley Road, go thru a four-way stop and turn left at the Reservoir sign to the trailhead.
Go up the trail past the first reservoir, then as the trail turns sharply left take an unimproved trail up the left side of the rocky Ice Cave Creek (also the location of the Palmer Lake Ice Cave cache). After perhaps 20 minutes, the trail will cross the creek--continue to follow it until it "T's" into a N/S trail marked on the USGS maps as an old four-wheel drive road. Follow this trail until it tries to cross the creek again and instead head on up Ice Cave Creek on its right side up typically 20-50' above the Creek on a rather indistinct trail. At an early point up the hill I've place a wood arrow on the ground marking the route where you might go too high. On the way, you will get your first view of Cap Rock--at this point the east and south walls will make it look like an unclimbable pillar. Just beyond the third little gully coming in from the right at 39 07.32 104 56.93 you should angle right up the ridge toward the SE corner of Cap Rock (the summit is on the same corner). At 07.36 56.98 angle into the huge rocks toward a big tree and then angle right to stay under three house-sized rocks. Then, generally work your way thru the rocks to the N staying 50-75' to the right of the E face of the Rock. (These last two sections involve significant scrambling moves over the rock--they are doable but may require a "spot" for some people.) At 07.47 57.00 turn west and scramble up to the point where you can see the ramp that leads south to the summit.

Hiked up to Cap Rock with the CO, Bob Hostetler, and a group of five other hikers. Really nice hike and beautiful views! Found the cache near the summit and signed log. Thanks to The CO for bringing us up to this fun cache.

Bramber, I think you are mixing up my geocache with a cache that has been completely open in the crack you scramble up to get to the very top. We went up there yesterday and my geocache is in exactly the place it's always been...note the guidance that it is under the only big, loose, rock just to the right and below the final summit cap. In fact, the cache (not a geocache) that was obvious (not hidden) in the crack just a few feet from the summit is gone. If you have trouble finding Cap Rock Challenge or the easiest route to get there, let me know and I'll give you some help. Bob Hostetler

Been here a couple times in the last month and the geocache is missing. Been here before so I knew what to look for. :(

Wow! What a pain the in the routefinder!!! BigSmile

No free beers for me, I'm afraid. Too many false paths and a detour up the nearby higher rock. It took me just under three hours. But this one has been on the list since we moved back home last year (yes, I'm a native!) so it was good to finally score this one. Thanks for the outdoor fun!

Now - to beat the storms back down to the bottom....

Everything was gone, so I replaced Cap Rock Challenge yesterday. When you put the cache in its location, please try to wedge it back in and block it from falling out from under the rock with the small rocks available. Thanks. Bob Hostetler

The top of this geocache broke and it got soaked by all the rain and snow recently. I took out the logbook to dry or replace it but the geocache is still in place. It may be five weeks before I can get back up there with a new logbook. Bob Hostetler
