BALD MOUNTAIN ROAD
This road which picks up at the west end of Main Street and runs in a winding westerly route was part of an extensive network of wagon roads that linked the mines, camps, and towns together throughout Gilpin and Clear Creek counties. The road runs along the north base of Bald Mountain. These dirt roads were the avenues of commerce that were necessary for the local economy to function, particularly in the higher elevated remote areas. The lower areas of each county were served by the narrow gauge railroad or a system of trams which were very small railways. The main means of moving people or freight on the roads were horse drawn wagons. Sometimes teams of pack mules or donkeys were used but all traveled over roads such as Bald Mountain Road. The wagons and beasts of burden would haul people, materials and supplies to the mines and stores and then haul to gold bearing ore out to the mills which were located on the creeks often times in the lower canyons. The water from the creeks was necessary to wash the lighter rock material from the gold in the milling process.

Headed up to the mountains today to escape some of the heat in the city. Great day to explore an area that we had not been to before.

Good condition.

This was my turn-around spot. Nice little pull-off from the road, kept me hidden from the passing truck and felt comfortable letting the geodogs have a run-around while I searched. Glad to find it on road side of the barbed-wire fence.
