A quick scramble up Rattlesnake Gulch. You will hike about 100 yards up a faint trail, then start scrambling.

There are several ways up, but the easiest way down is following the large fallen tree trunks.

The cache is a camouflaged metal canister about seven inches tall, like a miniature milk can.

Roundtrip hike distance 0.2 miles.
Park at the mouth of the gulch (N 38 10.496, W 105 10 105) if you have a high-clearance vehicle. Otherwise, park across Highway 96 and slightly downhill, where there is an easy pullout.

The cache would be accessible in mild winter weather but not in deep snow.

I have not personally seen a rattlesnake here, but I assume that the place is called Rattlesnake Gulch for a reason. There are many south-facing rocky ledges, so use appropriate caution in snake season.

This is one of about a dozen geocaches with "Rattlesnake Gulch" in their names. Collect the whole set!

North Hardscrabble Creek, below you, was named for the short-lived settlement of "Hardscrabble," also called San Buenaventura de los Tres Arroyos. It was a brief attempt at farming by traders associated with Fort Pueblo, but flourished only from about 1844-45. The settlement was located along the creek between Wetmore and Florence.

Fun little trip off the road a bit. Cut my finger on a rock, left some extra bandaids for the next clumsy person.

WOW this was a tough climb. Took a few wrong turns only to find a dead end, but eventually was successful. Thanks for placing this cache.

Thanks for the fun cache! Out and about this afternoon with the family to go to Bishop's Castle. Stopping to grab a few caches along the way. This one made the list. Stopped here at the nice parking and the kiddos and I made our way up the trail then straight up to the cache. Awesome location! So pretty here! Found quickly after poking around. Signed and stamped the log and replaced as found. All is well here. Carried the kiddos down the slippery hill. Off to the next!

That was a tough one! I looked for this once before, but sandals + shorts = bad idea and I gave up quickly. I came appropriately dressed today. It took quite a while for my GPS to settle down, and I searched several areas before I found the correct spot. What a nice container! The lid was on really tight, but I managed to get it open after a couple of minutes. I didn't see any snakes so I left one (rubber), plus some Get Out of Hell Free cards. Wow! The last log was 14 months ago. I'll give this a favorite point and maybe it will get found more frequently. Thanks for the awesome hide.
