GC3K0T9 Unknown Cache Well Vertically Traveled Cacher - 250' Challenge
Type: Mystery | Size: Regular Regular | Difficulty: 5 out of 5 | Terrain: 3 out of 5
By: WingsAndTales @ | Hide Date: 05/08/2012 | Status: Available
Country: United States | State: Colorado
Coordinates: N39° 00.703 W105° 00.548 | Last updated: 08/30/2019 | Fav points: 0
Takes less than an hour  Available during winter  Short hike (less than 1km)

The cache is at the posted coordinates but you must complete the challenge before you can log the cache. There is an old road/trail that will get you within about 130 feet of the cache.
How well traveled are you - vertically?

This is the hardest version of a set of 3 challenges. You will find the others at GC3K0T3 and GC3K0T7

Find a cache in each 250 foot segment of elevation from 0-250 to 14,000+ feet.

THE RULES

Find 57 caches to fill 250 foot altitude segments from 0' - 250', >250' - 500', >500' - 750', >750' - 1000'...>13,750 - 14,000', >14,000'.

Since I am missing a cache in the >13,500' - 13,750' segment I will allow finds with 56 segments and one free space. You may be missing a cache in only one segment. (8/31/12 Update - I now have caches in all the segments but the above rule still applies)

Only the elevation for the posted coordinates of the cache counts. It does not matter if a puzzle or multi takes you to a different elevation, the posted coordinates must be used to determine the segment.

Any cache type may be used and all past finds count.

DOCUMENTATION

The only method to determine your qualifications is to use the checker on project-gc.com. The direct link to the checker is checker. You can copy and paste the output in your log. I will use this site to verify your find.

Update: The only acceptable method of verification is the procject-gc checker. I recently discovered problems with a GSAK macro that was used in the past. The project-gc database tends to give lower than expected altitudes in certain cases. I am aware of this and have eliminated the 14,250+ segment because so few caches make it(currently there are only 2 in the state).

Issues with elevations from other databases:

Remember that different databases will show different elevations for a given cache. Be sure to check the elevation that project gc assigns to a cache before you assume it will fall in a certain segment. On the project gc website go to the Statistics tab and use the Top Elevation option. You can use the filter options to locate caches and their corresponding altitudes.

Thanks to TinSparrow for suggesting this cache idea to me.

Signed this one last fall and finally qualified today. I remember when I first saw this cache page, thinking that there were so many holes that it would take forever to fill - if ever. A few good travels in the past few months, and voila! It's fun looking back at these caches - I see my very first find, caches from at least 3 countries, a memorable hike into the Grand Canyon, several good road trips with great people, my first big hike here in Colorado, and of course lots of great memories along the way. Thank you for this unique challenge - favorite point, for sure!

There is a massive logging/tree thinning operation going on in the area. I found the container but the host was gone. I have removed the container while the work is in progress. I will get this one back up when the work is done. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I spent much of the last month completing the 500' interval challenge, which I did with a visit to Pikes Peak on Monday, and now I have to find even more high altitude caches? Well, I do like goals, so now I have another! TFTC n advance!!

Found it 03/12/2018 By DrPowercat
I was running through the new challenge cache feature on project-gc and noticed it said I qualified for this one. I ran the checker for myself and found out I do. I had not noticed the rule to allow for one spot to be missing. I have a cache in every specified range except 13,501-13,750.
I signed the log while I was in the area a few years ago, see my note on the cache page from 07/03/16.

DrPowercat has used Project-GC to see if he qualified for this challenge and he did.

I had put together a target list on Pikes Peak to fill high elevation segments. Before going up, I checked this page once more and saw the post about elevations and project-gc. That was a capability I wasn't aware of, so I ran a check. Whoa...there were unexpected gaps that required some re-planning! But that produced a very successful day. I might make it to Don't Be Square someday, but in the meantime I'll take the freebie for 13,501-13,750. Today it was fun to see that a forester had signed the log in September. Thanks for offering this challenge and cache.

I signed the log quite awhile ago and the new update to the cache reminded me to check my verifications. The checker said I passed. I also included my excel data. Thanks for the challenge!

For anyone who is working on this cache please note that the verification requirements have changed. The checker on project-gc.com will be the ONLY way to determine if you qualify. Also on the project-gc website look under the statistics tab for the "Top Elevation" option. You can filter for caches and see which ones will fill your requirements. If you want to know the value it assigns to a particular cache use the center/radius option and enter the coords for the cache and a radius. I am aware that the database the site uses tends to give lower than expected elevations on some caches. I eliminated the 14250+ segment requirement so there will be enough to choose from in each segment.

Was up in the area doing a walk-about and decided to sign this one since I know how close I am to this one (hey, I love playing at altitude a little). Should change as I move forward oh that's the hope.
