GC3K0T7 Unknown Cache Well Vertically Traveled Cacher - 500' Challenge
Type: Mystery | Size: Regular Regular | Difficulty: 4.5 out of 5 | Terrain: 2.5 out of 5
By: WingsAndTales @ | Hide Date: 05/08/2012 | Status: Available
Country: United States | State: Colorado
Coordinates: N39° 00.816 W105° 00.461 | Last updated: 08/30/2019 | Fav points: 0
Takes less than an hour  Not Available during winter  Short hike (less than 1km)

The cache is at the posted coordinates but you must complete the challenge before you can log the cache. There is an old road/trail that will get you within about 150 feet of the cache.
How well traveled are you - vertically?

This is the middle version of a set of 3 challenges. You will find the others at GC3K0T3 and GC3K0T9

Find a cache in each 500 foot segment of elevation from 0-500 to 14,000+ feet.

THE RULES

Find 29 caches to fill 500 foot altitude segments from 0' - 500', >500' - 1000', >1000' - 1500', >1500' - 2000'...>13,500 - 14,000', >14,000'.

Only the elevation for the posted coordinates of the cache counts. It does not matter if a puzzle or multi takes you to a different elevation, the posted coordinates must be used to determine the segment.

Any cache type may be used and all past finds count.

DOCUMENTATION

The only method to determine your qualifications is to use the checker on project-gc.com. The direct link to the checker is checker. You can copy and paste the output in your log. I will use this site to verify your find..

Update: The only acceptable method of verification is the procject-gc checker. I recently discovered problems with a GSAK macro that was used in the past. The project-gc database tends to give lower than expected altitudes in certain cases. I am aware of this but for the sake of simplicity everyone will have to use their numbers.

Issues with elevations from other databases:

Remember that different databases will show different elevations for a given cache. Be sure to check the elevation that project gc assigns to a cache before you assume it will fall in a certain segment. On the project gc website go to the Statistics tab and use the Top Elevation option. You can use the filter options to locate caches and their corresponding altitudes.

Thanks to TinSparrow for suggesting this cache idea to me.

The logging is complete in this area. They will be back to burn the slash piles eventually but nothing else should be disturbed in the future. I was able to use the original container and the same location.

Temporarily Disable Listing 04/08/2019 By WingsAndTales
There is a massive logging/tree thinning operation going on in the area. I found the container but the host is in the path of the cutting and likely to be removed. I have removed the container while the work is in progress. I will get this one back up when the work is done. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I specifically went to Colorado this past summer and found over 50 caches at elevations above 10,000 feet for a challenge similar to this one; it did include the beed for a below seal level cache. I was pleased to find that there was this challenge cache located near one of my highest caching adventures atop Pikes Peak, so I made my way up and down thru a high forest to GZ and found the container to sign the log. Now I've completed my qualifying list and can claim the find:

This is a great challenge, well-worth an FTF favorite point. Now I need to return to Colorado to find caches in the three intervals I'm missing for the 250' challenge. TFTC!

NOTE: Unfortunately I miscalculated the height for Bridget as it turns out to be just under 13,000 in elevation, so as per CO's instructions I'm changing this to a WRITE NOTE log instead. Now I'll have to return to Colorado to find the missing cache, as well as three others I need for the 250' challenge. I should have used the checker as required. I'm leaving my list here as it may be useful for other seekers of this challenge. TFTC anyway!

I completed my list of needed caches for this challenge on Monday on Pikes Peak, but I don't have a good, single list for this one yet, so I'll to wait until I get home to claim this one; great job and TFTC in advance!

This one has been in the works for awhile. A really successful day completed the requirements. Then a pleasant visit to the woods led to a smiley. Thanks for offering this challenge and cache.

For anyone who is working on this cache please note that the verification requirements have changed. The checker on project-gc.com will be the ONLY way to determine if you qualify. Also on the project-gc website look under the statistics tab for the "Top Elevation" option. You can filter for caches and see which ones will fill your requirements. If you want to know the value it assigns to a particular cache use the center/radius option and enter the coords for the cache and a radius. I am aware that the database the site uses tends to give lower than expected elevations on some caches but there are still plenty of options in any given segment.

Signed while up doing a walk about (this is helping me check where I am with several of these). Using "old data" (haven't pulled latest) I know I need to do one between 11k and 11.5 and 12.5k-13, and the ever dreaded 2.5k-3. Hopefully solved in the near term.

Caching in the Colorado Rockies and visiting my caching friend Hives in Colorado Springs.
Today's goal is to head toward Woodland Park and after logging the oldest in the state, find a number of challenge caches.

Khoda has used Project-GC to see if they qualified for this challenge and they did.
