Wheeler Mineral Spring

The water in this spring comes from Pikes Peak and the surounding mountains. Water soaks into rock fractures, as the water penetrates to great depth, it becomes heated and mineralized. The warm water naturally flows up the Ute Pass fault zone and into cavernous limestone where it becomes carbonated. Because the water takes thousands of years to complete its journey from mountain sources to the spring, it is totally free of contamination. This spring has a very distinct flavor because of the minerals it picks up as it passes through limestone and dolmite caverns.

For whatever reason, I've skipped this cache the countless other times I've been by. Finally stopped for it tonight! Thanks for this earthcache! (The people in the background of this photo were hilarious.)

We visited this and other springs as we strolled around Manitou Springs this afternoon. Rick sampled the water. It was pretty good - I enjoyed the mild carbonation!

We stopped in Manitou Springs for lunch after a morning at Garden of the Gods. After lunch, we walked around to try to get the earthcaches, and had to hurry as the storm clouds were approaching. I was going to taste this one, but had given the cup to my wife and son to try the 7-minute spring, and forgot to get it back from them, as they stopped for a frozen treat. Thanks for the cache.

This town was busy today and parking at a premium. But once I found a spot, I enjoyed a fun walk around town. I find these springs interesting, however the signs have been removed. However, the mineral content is available online. Email on its way, thanks for the Earth Cache!
