Visit the wreckage of a plane within reach of the Springs
This cache was placed at the site of a plane wreck that happen many years ago.

There are a few possible approaches to get to this. When Kris and I placed this cache we referenced the Pikes Peak Atlas map to find the location (highly recommended).

There is a trail right up to the cache, no off trail hiking needed. We found a large wing to North of the cache location, I recommend you explore the site.

The terrain rating of 4.5 is for distance and elevation gain.

This is a great area well worth the time to find it.

Enjoy.

Round-trip 5.72+ miles, 5 hours 48 minutes, 1,633 ft ascent

Out to Anniversary #4 from the Ormes Peak parking spot and back. Good hike, great weather, perfect day. I'm exhausted. Need a beer.  Grabbed this one on the way back up the mountain.

Spent quite a bit at time here with my camera documenting the crash location which was really about 800 ft long because I found parts 400 ft to the southeast of it and the wing way off to the north north west. Great great location. Definitely can see the aftermath of the Waldo Canyon fire which is interesting all the way along.

At the same time, I also signed the memorial log book that is placed here.  To pull that out of the tube, I had to pull the multi-tool of it's pocket. (Hint) see attached photo.

Thanks for the geocache today.  You will get a favorite point because of the location, this being geocache #2,100 (as planned), and the unique area here.

Not much left at this site. I wonder when the crash occurred. TFTC.

After being out of the country and away from any mountains for almost 2 months, I needed a hiking fix. This served the bill well as I came over from Blodgett Open Space to get a few caches. Thanks to jjasks for placing and maintaining this one all these years. Log was a bit damp, so I dried it some prior to signing. TFTH!!
Saw this about 750 feet from ground zero

SwimFin found this cache quickly and in good shape (once I got to the area). Left a signature dolphin key chain. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache. Cheers, SwimFin!

Went for a hike to pick up a few back in here.

First time that I got back up this way after the fire.

GZ has changed some from the fire, it was hot enough to melt some of the metal parts.

The cache is in fine shape.

Thanks for a fun hide to find!

I took pictures of the log.

Log in great shape...

The pens got warm, but still work...

Great location. I logged a DNF on this one several years ago and finally had some time to search again and easily found it today. Dianne said she also found it when she went by here a few months ago but didn't log it then. Dianne and I decided to hike back along this ridge (we haven't been up here for about six months or so). The storm hit just after we gained the ridge about an hour before reaching this cache. Cache is in good shape. TFTC!

Found today. Fascinating site, and a beautiful day for a hike.

Hi!

We made it! We started at Scar Mountain and we found it! I was exhausted by the time we got there, let alone we had to come back.

There wasn't as much parts as I thought there would be but it was cool!

Beautiful trail, beautiful weather in good company!

Ouch! Quite a site! Hard to imagine something the size of a B-24 juxtaposed on that mountainside, even worse, spread over 750 feet. Googling "Jimmy Camp B-24D" and then scrolling down to a hit that includes "Wreckchasing Message Board" will provide information - and interesting dialog - extracted in part from the original accident report. In 1944, those 2ndLts (four of them) would likely all have been 18 or 19 years old. We were lucky to have our geosense working, so noticed the hide fairly quickly. Thanks for getting us to a very sobering, poignant cache. TNLNSL.
