Significant hike  Difficult climbing

On the way to the top, 1/4 of the whole trip, 1/2 way up to the top, but you have to come back so 1/4 of the whole trip. Stop and take a look at the beautiful scenery at this point. Then turn back up and make it to the top, we were turned back here becasue of a threatening storm. Nick was our guide and may be your guide too, you are in good hands. Hi to Nick. We will come back in 2015 to place another cache at the top, weather permitting. Enjoy!!!

We are here for the Alegre Retreat Art Quilt Conference held every May at the gateway Canyons Resort. We have been planning this trip to the top of the palisades for several years and each year there has been an injured person in our mighty group of 3. 2014 we are all well and a threatening thunderstorm only allowed us a taste. 2015 we will attempt it again!!!

Best DNF ever! Set out from the nearby Gateway Canyons Resort where we were staying after completing a week long cycling trip. Our GPS indicated we were 1.7 miles (as the crow flys) from the cache, so off we went... On our way we saw: rabbits; a mountain lion paw print; live and dead snakes; anthills; blooming cacti; fall leaf colors; gorgeous red rock cliffs; many different colored rocks. We followed our compass and left the road once on BLM land on what we thought was the most likely access point to the cache. The trail gradually became less obvious but not to be deterred we continued. Eventually we ended up in a dry wash scrambling over boulders but getting closer. At .21 miles from the cache we reached a decision point. Either keep climbing over ever larger boulders or climb up an unstable hillside. Points we discussed: our dwindling water supply; limited provisions; time of day (afternoon); our middle age; and our wish to live another day (really? .... the cacher before us "did a short run up and back" to the cache? Either zman-sofster is an intrepid climber or we were on the wrong trail). Ultimately we turned back. In the end we hiked 10 miles and had a grand adventure. We are giving it a favorite even though we didn't find it.

Finally got down here to get this cache. Did a short run up and back today and beautiful weather. Thanks for placing this one. The rating is not a five and should be reconsidered. Tfc ftf
