The X-Files
The series revolved around two FBI Agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who investigate speical cases called "X-Files" which involved elements of the paranormal or extra-terrestrial. When the series opens, Agent Mulder, once considered a promising agent with a briliant future, has begun what his superiors see as his downward slide into the world of the ridiculous with his focus on X-Files cases. Agent Scully, a medical doctor and a skeptic, is assigned to scientifically analyze Mulder's discoveries, offer alternate rational theories to his work, and in doing so return him to mainstream FBI cases. The series sets off on a decade+ of solving (or only attempting to solve) mysteries that weave in and out of various coverups, conspiracies, and larger "mytharcs" ... a term coined by show writers and fans to describe the combination of mythos and story archs in the show. As you might guess from the cache name, I identified with Fox Mulder's perspective the most ... but I crushed mightly on Dana Scully.
The X-Files was inspired by earlier television series which featured similar elements, including The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Tales from the Darkside, Twin Peaks, and especially Kolchak: The Night Stalker ... all buy one of which I recalled from my own youth spent staying up past midnight to watch the really good stuff that did not air during regular programming hours (and I am not talking about cable TV, here).
