RED CANYON ZEPHYR

This is located in Red Canyon Park north of Canon City. Pull into one of the 2 parking areas that are approx. 9/10 of a mile from the entrance. Start walking up the sandy dry creek bed. If you are into geology at all you will have a sore neck from looking around.
This is the second cache that we put up today. The cache is located in a green ammo box. The cache contains a poncho, treasure tin, Hot Wheels, a $50 key ring, a pack of seeds, 2 - USA Flags, bracelets and necklaces made by the little guys and some new quarters. It is beside a downed cedar tree between to large rock boulders. It is covered with cedar kindlin. My E Trex showed an elevation of 6,377 ft. at the cache.

Pack a lunch if you want to. You could make this a full day. There is a bunch to explore here.

 Hints

When your GPS points right and says 35 feet (approx) to the destination, you need to go up the side of the hill. The cache is about 35 feet (approx) above the creek bed.

We decided to end the year with this cache. Very cold today, but we did it anyway. All is well with the replacement container. We really like the Red Canyon Park and will be back to get some more smileys. Tftc.

I stopped by this cache to pick up the geocoin. Apparently some sap dripped onto the container and worked its way into the lid and effectively glued the lid on. It took 20 minutes of prying with a pocket knife to get the lid loose. I had a smaller container in my pack so I transferred as many items as would fit into that and left it. Although it's a smaller container it should still be easy to find using the hint. The next time I get up to this area I'll drop off a larger container. Got to keep this oldie going.

I noticed that some cachers are not taking the best route to this cache. Start at the mouth of the canyon 0.4 miles to the east. That is much easier than taking the shorter route from the north.

What a magnificent cedar. No picture can do it justice. Would not have seen this if we had not been geocaching. Tftc and beautiful memory.

Very cool area. Watched a mama hummingbird in her nest and spotted some very big bear tracks.

The best cache of the day! What a neat canyon leading in. Lots of bees at GZ. Almost all the way in to the cache site we started seeing massive bear tracks in the wet sand. They were going in both directions. Seems it travels the same geotrail as we do, so be aware. We took lots of pictures on this hike and even watched a hummingbird build a nest.
