There is an extensive history of the two Franciscan Friars who traveled much of the current southwestern United States in search of an overland route from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Las Californias.  Starting in July of 1776, while our nation was just in its infancy, a small band of explorers set out and covered much of the Colorado Plateau through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. What they saw was "lush, mountainous land filled with game and timber, strange ruins of stone cities and villages, and rivers showing signs of precious metals." Their detailed maps and documentation caused the route to become an early template for the Old Spanish Trail.  There are many roadside markers in each state commemorating the camps and stream crossings of these two men.

Although the physical log will only allow you to leave a small mark, you must choose who you will follow for your online log.  Will you be brief and quiet like the older Atanasio, or will you be verbose and loquacious like the younger Silvestre Velez?

FTF, YEAH! We are trying (and mostly succeeding) at hunkering down on our refuge (home GZ of 10 acres well out of town) but simply could NOT pass up the chance to get this FTF. Had a pretty good idea of the location and what we would find there as have visited most of these "historic markers" in the past. Held off until had growing need to conduct some business in town and check on some home-bound elderly's so grabbed the geobag and headed out. Knowing there was a "wooden nickle" in this small cache figured that could find a geocoin that would fit. Imagine my surprise to find that I had left our baggie of TBs back at home GZ! So sad, but did find a brand new very neat looking Delta City key fob that fit and left as SWAG - had to remove and place key ring in separately as would not lay flat enough to close cache.

Here is hoping that BG2015 places caches at each of the other 7 plaques in this series to bring them to the attention of the public as they are somewhat unnoticed. IN FACT I tried to spot a couple of others that I know to be along the highway on the return trip and was unable. With a cache hidden at each they would be easy to spot!
