This is the first cache in a four part series that will take you to the top of Mt. Lincoln. You can arrive at this geocache from several directions and trails. The shortest route is probably the Stagecoach trail. Other options are the Gearhart mine trail (Lemon Squeezer trail) or Main Canyon/Coal Canyon road and trail behind Cameo (exit 46 on I-70). For a better description of these trails and routes see http://www.gjhikes.com/ then click on Colorado; Grand Junction; Little Book Cliffs area. Then review the Main Canyon, Mt. Lincoln, Stagecoach and Lemon Squeeze trails. The trail from this point is upwards and is marked by a few rock cairns and game trails. It is a steep climb of about 45 degrees. The route does not require any rock climbing or dangerous cliffs, etc. From this point it is about 850 feet in elevation to the upper geocache in this series. To my knowledge, this route is the only safe and easy way to access the top of Mt. Lincoln. Near this geocache is a fiberglass water guzzler that was installed by the BLM to provide water for wildlife such as birds (Chukar Partridge), mule deer, coyotes, mountain lions, and there are some wild, or as I like to refer to them “feral” horses. Please do not disturb this guzzler or loiter too long around this site since it is important to wildlife and is considered a sensitive area. The geocache is a medium size, water-tight box with log, pencils and some swag. Original items include some hand-tied fishing flies that could be exchanged for other small items plus a FTF gift. Should be an easy find. The adventure is getting here not finding the cache. Happy hiking and enjoy the views.

Started in from coal canyon, ended up a little low on a bike trail that was descending so had to cross country a bit higher to find the upper trail. Soon found it on a higher bench and off to the guzzler. Bone dry. Now the tough ascent begins.

Been watching these four caches since Monday when they were posted, hoping that someone would find them and I would be lazy and not go after them. Well the deed is done and I found all four, had a great day, and my body hurts. I have lived in the area for more than 30 years and have never been on Mt. Lincoln. Thanks for giving me a reason.

THANKS FOR THE CACHE
