Welcome to the Phases of the Moon!

The moon is a part of our daily lives, and it's amazing how little most of us know about it. Many people have the misconception that the phases of the moon are caused by the shadow of the Earth. The phases of the moon are actually just a result of our perception of the moon's half-illuminated surface as it orbits the earth. This puzzle involves the simple addition of two numbers. The numbers come from (1) the moon's phase, and (2) its location as it orbits the earth.

My wife and I got out for a little exercise and decided to stop for a cache. We were able to spot the cache without any problems. My wife helped me work out the solution to this fun puzzle.

Great puzzle. Nicely done. Sadly the log bounced away into the grass when I was trying to remove it from the container. I spent quite a while looking for it. In the end I replaced it with another. So this new log only has my handle on it.
