Park on the main road near the General Store and walk across the bridge.

Devil's Gulch and Cold Canyon began to see signs of early development when George Ragan ranched cattle near here in the early 1870s. Peter Pauldy acquired the land in the center of town in 1885, and the spot was known as the Pauldy Ranch until the Knapps established the first permanent homestead here in 1897 and set up a sawmill, at which time it took on the name Knappville. And finally the area was platted for a resort by the Boulder Presbytery in 1903. It was Rev. William Schureman who suggested the name "Glen Haven" at that time. A streamside lot cost $50!

This stone monument is a memorial to the founders of Glen Haven, Rev. Schureman and Mason Knapp. It was dedicated in 1948 with a simple ceremony: Rev. Marcus Grether of Greeley made the dedication speech, boy scouts unveiled the plaque, Joe Knapp read the inscription, and the program concluded with accordion music, polkas, and hymns accompanied on a portable organ. The plaque includes the names of the 27 original members of the resort.

The last line tells it all: "The mountains shall bring peace to the people" (Psalms LXXII).

This cache is part of a geotrail of historical caches in the Glen Haven area. Retrieve the code from all 14 caches plus the found date of the virtual and receive a commemorative geocoin. The cache list can be found here: Historic Glen Haven GeoTrail. And remember not to be a cache pirate! If you take something, leave something at least as good for the next cacher.

I placed my first cache, an ammo box, at this site in 2012. It was muggled so I moved the cache directly across the road to the fence of the neighbor with permission. Then the flood hit and there were signs to not enter this area unless you were a resident. As a result, I moved the cache to near the Fire Dept, so it would be accessible to the general public. Glad to see you place another cache there to bring people to that spot, and provide some history.
