I love to ski and will try a lot of terrain but didn't think that was the best way to do this one. A lot of the time this run isn't even open so I kept putting it off. When I decided to go to the GCCO campout this year this looked like a great detour on the way to Grand Lake. Happily Kerewin0430 was able to got along and share the adventure. Even better she was able to make this one her 2000th find! Awesome day in the mountains. TFTC

WingsAndTales invited me to cache with her on the way to the campout, and this was one of the goals she had in mind. What a hike!!! We had already had an adventure and a half on a different mountain this morning (haha), so the good vibes were abundant as we took on this hill. One foot in front of the other and we were suddenly slipping and sliding over to GZ! I love to "earn the view" and I'd rather hike all day for one cache than do a power trail, so...this challenging hike was pure fun. The cherry on top for this one was that this was my 2000th cache!! No creative counting/logging (haha) - this was the real deal! Thank you for placing it!

Finding one or more D=4.5/T=5 caches was one of the main objectives of this trip, as that combo has been holding me back from advancing to the next Fizzy level. I already DNF'ed an attempt a few days earlier on this trip, but on this day, would find this and another (GC59Q5V) earlier in the day by kayak, which made for a spectacular day. It took a while to figure out the best place to access the Mary Jane area and I started at the main Winter Park area and eventually found my way to Lot C. Someone indicated that there would be no one on the Mary Jane side of the resort (quite true) and that bear and moose have been sighted in the area recently. Was wondering if it was a good idea to try to walk up a ski mountain in Colorado without being fully acclimatized to the altitude. Anyway, it was a great walk up Corona Way and then Roundhouse first to Knox (GC1ARRQ). It seemed like a short distance across and I tried not to lose any elevation and ended on a promontory half way where I could not proceed unless getting above the cliffs or losing elevation and coming across the slabby boulder field at the bottom of the cliffs. I chose the latter and eventually made my way until I was under the gz, and then had to climb the steep pitch towards the gz. Thankfully, the coords were excellent and there was little guesswork once nearby. However, the cache may be at a perfect height with snow on the ground, but I could not reach it and had to scrounge up some rocks to stand on. It was not easy to find rocks of the right size and shape that was stable enough to stack up and yet small enough that I could toss to the gz. Several rocks that I attempted to throw down to the gz missed and went hurtling down the slope for several hundred feet. Anyway, I needed 5 rocks -- they are still there. The cache is in superb condition (see photo).
This cache has not been found in 1162 days and qualifies as a "resurrection" according to a challenge (GC2FMJ5) in Massachusetts near where I live.
On the way down, I noticed that there was an FTF opportunity that effectively was enabled on this day since the cache owner corrected the coordinates after a bunch of DNF's over the first 41 days. I noticed this shortly before passing by that cache and was able to make the grab. This was an amazing day in terms of luck (something that doesn't happen often).
One day when I have berries for dessert at a fancy restaurant, I will ask for zabaglione and see how far I get. Fav point -- TFTC!

I had a great time hiking and caching the Mary Jane area today, finding 8 of the 10 caches I targeted. I left my home in Loveland on a nice morning in the upper 50s. But I got a rude surprise as I crossed Berthoud Pass, my dashboard showed it was 39°, and there was a dusting of fresh snow above timberline! I parked at the lot next to the Freeriders lift and it had warmed up all the way to 43! I threw on an extra long sleeve T and headed up the mountain. I had a route planned out that minimized elevation loss as best I could. My route was Manchego, Granita, Spumoni, Zabaglione, Knox, Mary Jane Cache, Ricciarelli, Camembert, Mary Jane Micro, and finally Provolone. The two I could not find were the first stage of Spumoni and Provolone. Each cache found was located fairly quickly and I signed the logs.
This one was quite the tricky one to get to as I came down from above and it was STEEP! I slipped once and banged my knee on a rock which then resulted in blood running all the way down my shin and to my sock. There is no way I could have skied to this one, and it was difficult enough on foot. But I did eventually get there and made the find. Thanks for the lure to Mary Jane!!

Took me two runs to hit it. I love it when a cache I placed on a run only experts can get to. Thanks!

I wanted to try to get this one in particular, before the ski area opens because I had noted this run isn't always open. Plus I trust my hiking/climbing skills more then my skiing skills. Regardless it was quite challenging. I worked my way over from Knox like Denali had done. It was sporty getting to GZ but I enjoyed the rush! Traded pins and satisfyingly signed the log. TFTH!!
When the CO mentions cliffs in the area...........
On the approach, ski season is coming!

I hiked over to the cache after finding Knox. I was in for surprises and some interesting terrain as I explored safe ways to get down to the cache vicinity from the position I found myself in. But I eventually discovered a good solution. Then, of course, the challenge was finding a safe way to reach the cache, in view of some broken limbs. But that dilemma was also solved, and I soon was signing the log sheet. But oh, I then needed to get the container back up there. Darn....but I did. Thanks for this exciting, terrain-challenging cache. It is one I will NOT forget! And my memories will be fond ones of a great cache.

Hiked to three of the caches today with a friend from Nebraska. We are spending the night in Blackhawk and then going to Copper Mountain tomorrow to get a couple more we needed for our double fizzy. This one was quite the adventure. We couldn't figure out which grouping of trees to go to, so we stumbled around quite a while. the gps had us going around in circles. "OK--30 feet that way--those trees" yeah, right. nope, wrong. now it says 60 feet. Well, we did finally find it after breaking a hiking pole, sliding down half way and losing the gps in the process. (found the gps after we finally found the cache.) Gee, nobody has been up here for 2 years!. Well, a video of the excursion would have been a great lot of fun for u-tube watchers, especially grabbing the cache once we saw it.
Anyway, had a lot of fun with the 3 that we got. TFTC!

Major hike

Out hiking the ski area today and picking up some caches that I didn't find yet. It seems like this run was always closed last season when I was here, so today was a great day to get this off my list. Glad I brought some "special gear" along! TFTC
