History (Please Read)

The Cold War Horse is a memorial created to acknowledge Rocky Flats, its workers and the surrounding community.

Rocky Flats was a nuclear weapons production facility that was a massive manufacturer during the Cold War.

The facility manufactured almost all plutonium triggers for the US before it shut down after 40 years.

Roughly 70,000 plutonium triggers were produced here. Plutonium is a radioactive and toxic material.

Because of this, extra precautions had to be made. However, the water, soil, and air were

contaminated with radiation.

After a fire at the facility in 1969 citizens protested. In 1989 the FBI raided the grounds. This was led by Jon Lipsky.

They found many violations and production was halted. The plant was put on the EPA Superfund Cleanup list

in 1993. The owners of the facility pleaded guilty and the plant closed.

The cleanup price estimate was $37 billion dollars and would take 70 years. Kaiser Hill came up with a

$7 billion plan that would take only 10 years. They put it into action.

The Cold War Horse was dedicated 10 years after the cleanup on October 18th, 2015.

On September 7th, 2015, the sculpture was vandalized.

“The sculpture was pulled out of the ground with a truck, then it was beaten with a sledgehammer,” said the artist

Jeff Gipe. He said the fix would take months.

Gipe's father worked at the facility for 20 years. He used to live near the facility but moved to New York.

We looked around the horse and nearby objects, but we’re not able to find anything. It was difficult because most of the area is roped off.

Interesting sculpture! Such a shame that someone had to vandalize it. Had driven past it before, but didn’t realize that there was a cache hidden by it. Signed log. Thanks for the history and the cache! Giving it a fav for pointing out the unusual sculpture!

I was out getting a cache or two and I remembered this cache was here. I was glad for the pull-over and little snow cover. The coordinates took me to the right spot for a fast find.
