Just off Highway 141 - an easy cache for travelers.

A fun and interesting stop along Hwy. 141 that has been a favorite picnic spot of ours for over 15 years. Gyp Gap Rockshelter is not just a name we conjured up for this cache. It is now the "official" name given to the physical location of an archaeological (petroglyph) site of interest not too far from the cache location, by the Bureau of Land Management. So not only can you stop and take in some great scenery while you find the geocache, there's much to learn about the area near the parking area. Plus! If you look closely as you make your way to the cache, there's also a benchmark to be found as an added bonus.

The cache is contained in a large ammo can (green & gray in color), with over 30 small items stashed inside to make your hunt for treasure rewarding for all ages. We've also included a First To Find trophy with the original contents, plus logbook and a pen. If you're a letterboxer, be sure to leave your graphic mark in the log for all to enjoy. (We intend to add a special rubberstamp to the cache box soon. Note: DONE! 14Jan2006)

High clearance vehicles will find no problem parking a little closer in. There is a natural drainage channel that crosses the short roadway into the Rockshelter parking area, which will be a deterrent to some cars. But, an alternative parking spot is evident prior to the rough spot in the road. Elevation at the parking areas was reported to be about 5,959MSL. A slight climb of about 90 feet in elevation gain is required to get to the cache, lending a great view of the surrounding area for photographs. Not to forget that there seems to always be plenty of wildlife to view along the way.

We hope you enjoy this magical, beautiful area of Southwest Colorado as much as we do and that you'll help keep it clean and unblemished for all visitors there. (Any reports back to us about the condition of the cache will also be appreciated.)

On vacation with Merganser, and our dogs, picking up new counties, Delorme pages and finding her 100th cache. Thanks for bringing us here, we would have driven past it without the cache, TFTC!

Took the hard way up but found an easier way down. Super cool. Got a cool rock that says Rock Man. Traded that for a parachord bracelet.

Bug Ranger and I are on a multi-day caching binge to get needed De Lorme pages and counties. We climbed the rock ramp up to the cache, and were rewarded by great views and a really nice hide. A favorite; TFTC!

Came through here a year ago, and had to pass it by for time constraints. This year, I'm on a multi-day geo-road trip with EstesLynne, going for caches in Colorado Counties & filling in our DeLorme pages, so I was determined to make this one of EstesLynne's caches in this county. Nice walk up the rocks for the cache. Love the ammo box & personalized labels! Nice views, too, so it gets a favorite point from me! TFTC!
