This cache is located on I-70, east of Parachute, Colorado. This site is on a curve so just drive by and stop east of the site and pull way off the interstate.
This cache is located at a place where on June 21, 2002, the wildland fire community lost 5 of its own in a terrible traffic accident. The fire fighters were on their way to the Hayman fire, Colorado’s largest fire during the 2002 fire season. This fire raged from June 8th to July 2nd, burned 137,760 acres, 133 homes and 466 out buildings were lost. Total costs were estimated at $40 million dollars. The fire fighters were part of the Grayback No. 80 crew out of La Grande, Oregon.

We headed east on I-70 from Grand Junction to home today, making some grabs along the way. We witnessed a single car rollover (everyone was okay) on the East side of Vail Pass at MM 198. An SUV was driving way too fast, hydroplaned, drove off the road and rolled several times. We helped out at the scene until help arrived. We enjoyed all of the placements.

Found it today at 7:59 am. Quick one. No issues to report. What a tragic incident. SL. TFTC.

I remember when this happens I was still in high school... I've never had a chance to stop and pay my respects it is an awesome memorial to stop and see for sure!!! TFTC and a good reason to stop

have gone past this memorial hundreds of times but got chance to stop this time.. being a retired person who has fought over 400 fires in my career this is a fitting tribute to folks who work hard in dangerous situations. TN and L-pizza hut wooden nickel. T4TC. SL.
