Artic Ground Squirrel Pictures, Images and Photos
Arctic Ground Squirrels live on the Permafrost in Canada and Alaska. They have a nickname- Parka Squirrel, as you could imagine, it gets pretty chilly where they live.

They are the only Arctic animal that hibernates.

They hibernate for up to seven months of the year. During this period they spend considerable time in what is called a ‘super-cooled’ state in which their body temperature drops below freezing. This unique ability helps them to survive the long cold winter, underground.

The Arctic ground squirrel is the only known mammal capable of lowering its body temperature to below freezing, a strategy which helps it survive through the long, Arctic winter.

In town visiting my daughter and her husband who live up on top of a nearby mountain. Came down here to take their dog for a hike. They were gracious enough to let me grab some caches along the way. Actually found cache on the ground but replaced higher. TFTC SL

Sixth cache of the day. We flew to Denver this morning. Picked up our rental car and began driving to Buena Vista. We stopped at Meyer Ranch Park for a short hike to begin the acclimation to the altitude. Nice to have a number of caches to hunt as well. This was a quick find as we were descending back to the car. Many thanks.
