lodgepole chipmunk

Even though this area has TONS of lodgepole pines, we do not have any lodgepole chipmunks. They live in California.

Chipmunks are not usually finicky eaters, but these guys will catch insects and toss away the head and legs for the abdomen. (The head is the best part, in my estimation—crunchy on the outside and gooey in the middle.)

They will also eat slugs, snails, birds eggs, small mice and frogs! My second-cousin told me he saw a lodgepole chipmunk eat a 2 foot long garter snake!

In town visiting my daughter and her husband who live up on top of a nearby mountain. Came down here to take their dog for a hike. They were gracious enough to let me grab some caches along the way. At this point, we thought about heading to the top but decided our senior dog would have a hard time with it. I think we'll be back Tuesday to finish going up. Cache in good shape. Dropped a geo coin. TFTC SL

Fourth cache of the day. We flew to Denver this morning. Picked up our rental car and began driving to Buena Vista. We stopped at Meyer Ranch Park for a short hike to begin the acclimation to the altitude. Nice to have a number of caches to hunt as well. This was a quick find as we were ascending up the hillside. From here, we began to make our way back down on the loop back to the parking area. Many thanks.

I walked right past this one, thinking I would search a nearby spot. My younger son glanced over and spotted this one all on his own!
