A cache hidden near a premier rock climbing area
Directions: Take highway 550 north out of Durango. Just as you’re leaving town, turn left (west) into the parking lot for Mercy Medical Center North Campus & the D.O.T. Park in the parking lot labelled "X-Rock Parking", to the south of the building. Follow the trail running above the medical building. Soon you’ll come to a sign that says “Notice. Climbing is hazardous…”. Follow this trail north. You’ll pass many interesting rock faces and on a nice day there will be many interested climbers working the ‘problems’. When you come to X-Rock itself, you should recognize it*. The cache is beyond X-Rock. If there are climbers nearby, please be discreet in opening the cache. The cache is a small ammo box. Please hide the cachebox well when you are done, as this area gets a fair amount of foot traffic. The walk from the parking spot to the cache is .25 mile each way, over moderately rough terrain.

*If you don’t know what X-rock is and you want to be really sure you will recognize it, drive past the waypoint on 550, looking northwest from the road. X-rock is the large rock with a crack shaped like an X.

Note 8/7/04: The original cache was plundered. Today I replaced the cache, in a nearby location, a bit better concealed from the climbers.

This geocache is available for adoption. The owner is moving away. Please contact Dancegypsy through the website if interested in adopting this geocache, or any of her caches in Southwest Colorado.

Nice day for a short and interesting hike. As others have said, it is just a bit under a half mile each way, and once at the base of the cliff, a little rough. For us the coordinates were spot on. The 'X' is pretty amazing. As you walk along the Dakota Sandstone it is largely unjointed, and then, bang, here's a joint pair for all time. The first view of it along the trail is perfectly framed by junipers, and another grove at the base of the wall is pretty neat, too. Appreciate that this old cache is still in great shape and good to go. Gets a fave from us. TFTC
