Takes less than an hour  Hunting  Parking available  Picnic tables nearby  Camping available  No Night Cache  Short hike (less than 1km)

This cache is not available Jan 1 until June 15. The area is closed for elk calving season.

This cache sounds like something illegal, but it’s not.  Please don’t park along the narrow road.  A 660 meter flight to the cache from the parking lot justifies the rating.  Enjoy!

The flammulated owl (Psiloscops flammeolus) is a small, nocturnal owl approximately 6 inches long with a 14 inch wingspan. Males and females can be distinguished by their weight. The owl gets the name flammulated from the flame like markings on its face. It breeds from southern British Columbia and the western United States to central Mexico. It is a neotropical migrant and winters south of the United States but also in Southern Texas, Arizona, and California (Verna,). Unlike many owls, they are migratory, leaving Canada and the United States in the fall. In the winter, they are found in northern Central America, from southern Mexico to Guatemala and El Salvador. Flammulated owls leave their breeding grounds in August to head to their wintering areas and then return to their breeding grounds in late April and early May (Samson, 2005). The flammulated owl is similar in appearance to the western screech owl but is only about one-quarter the mass, lacks large ear tufts (but has small ear tufts that are barely visible), has dark eyes and a different voice. The call is a series of relatively deep single or double hoots.

Congratulations to hartsdale for the FTF! 9/108

Found this on my way to maintain my "view" geocaches, just down the road. I can attest this is a "psylocibin-free" geocaches. Appropriate for the whole family.

Had an early morning drive in the foothills, before it got too hot - this was the second of four geocaches that I found along the way. TN-LN-SL. Thanks !

Day one of a three day trip to the mountains to find caches, check on our caches and do a little gambling at Black Hawk. Like greasepot, we questioned whether there really is such an animal or did the CO (who we personally know and know he can embellish a bit !) make him up? Nope - there really is such an animal. As is usual with us, we made this much harder and longer than necessary. The first attempt we missed a turn and after 30 minutes found ourselves at the end of a road with a locked gate. Drove the whole way back to Evergreen, did a few more caches and then decided to give it another try. This time we found where we made the mistake and slowly made our way up the road. Got to the parking area and were ready to walk when we realized we could drive to the cache. Found it quickly and very happy to claim our smiley !!

9:05 Decided to get some exercise today. Parked the car at the parking coords for Psiloscops and then grabbed my bike and rode to all three caches. (Well, I ditched my bike on the side of the road for Squaw/Chief). Signed the logs and left a scrabble tile in each cache. Thanks! Now I need to see if there is such an animal as a psiloscops Flammeolus - it sounds like a spell that Harry Potter would use.

This one had caught my curiosity as to why no finds with two watching it?

Anyway, I headed out very early this morning to take a look.

All gates are open and Elk are everywhere from downtown to the end of this road with several Deer here and there.

The container is in fine shape.

Thanks for the cache!

Now on up to look for the next ones.
