Black Mesa Overlook Series

Take a scenic drive over Black Mesa on Highway 92 and check out the overlooks that allow you to see the north rim of the upper black canyon.

This series of geocaches will take you to the main overlooks and allow you to do some sightseeing and geocaching at the same time. Great views and and wildlife abound.

This first one is at the rest stop and trail head for Crystal Dam overlook. You will need to do some hiking to see the dam. It's an easy trail. Plan for an hour or more to do the hike. The cache is a lot less walking if you just want to find the prize. Make sure you're looking for the signs. Happy Hunting!

Second cache today for this CO, both caches with the same rating. First one I could not find, however, this one was right out in the open, not really a hide except for the tall weeds. I wasn't sure if this was the intended spot or not, but I inked my name on the log. Very curious day.

Found but not after tramping where I was uncomfortable on the inside of the fence where the cache was not.

I encourage “Leave No Trace” geocaching in non-urban settings. Geocaches not easily reached from established trails result in searches that create new “social” trails. That disturbs and can damage the natural areas we all enjoy. Please place geocaches keeping this in mind. Even placements that can be reached from trails do not necessarily prevent off-trail trampling during searches. Well thought-out hints can help prevent such unnecessary damage of the lands we enjoy.

FTF woot woot!! We came out to give this one a go after a DNF on the other overlook cache the other day. We will swing by and give it another go after finding this one. All the recent snow up here has made these fun caches to grab. Almost need snow shoes this time of year. The snow was right at knee deep. The little thaw and freeze had this one cased in ice like Han Solo in Carbonate. We were successful in breaking it out of its place without damaging the cache. TFTC!
