Easy walk from parking area. Seasonal stream may add challenge in the Spring. The cache is a clear plastic container.Interesting Morrison Formation exposure on Cabin Creek. These sandstone bluffs are surrounded by sage brush, juniper trees, wild roses, and cottonwoods near a seasonal stream. Nearby crevices host Bushy-Tailed Woodrat nests, (packrat), characterized by their penchant for bleached white animal bones. Note – the cache is NOT in a woodrat nest. . The cache is accessed from a typical BLM road so a high clearance vehicle is suggested. We also suggest parking at N38 33.254 W106 48.347 to avoid soft areas near the seasonal stream. The parking area is within 300 ft of the cache. The continuation of the road across the stream definitely calls for 4WD. The road is closed seasonally to protect wintering areas for the abundant wildlife in the area
RockDok provided the following update on the cache site: The rock unit there is actually the Junction Creek Sandstone - some regard it as a member of the Morrison. What is interesting is that this is an old rock quarry that was used to build parts of Taylor Hall on the Western State College campus in Gunnison - Look at the north end of Taylor near the Library. A few (20?) years ago they remodeled Taylor and the contractor came to the WSC Geology Dept. about where the sandstone came from - it is unusual, being so bright red - but they didn't know about that quarry and were puzzled. Somehow, the contractor found someone who knew (maybe Bob Arnold or Rial Lake) and he later told the geology department about it. The rough jeep road continues on through the quarry and eventually winds its way up to the mesa above and can hook up with the Dry Gulch road..

07/15/2014 By afudc Spent the day caching as I traveled from Steamboat Springs to Gunnison. Some were park and grabs and some were quite a ways of the beaten path. Made this my last find for the day. Another one off the beaten path. Thanks for the hide.

09/07/2011 By 3cacheteers Interesting to find the red rock out there. The cows were using the parking area so decided to leave them alone and walk a bit further to the cache. Nice hide and interesting country. Felt like I had the whole world to myself. TNLNSL
