This is number 10 in a series of historical points within Douglas County Colorado.

Miriam Fonder organized a school in her home in 1861. A log school house was built about a quarter mile from there and the first teacher there was Jennie Stone. That building was in use during the seventies. A stone structure was built in 1884 and that building still exists. The stone was quarried at the Plateau Quarry about six miles west of the school and north of Silver Heights. During the early years, Indian teepees were in full view of the school.

The school was renovated and is in use by the Denver Southeast Suburban Water and Sanitation District. They have taken great care to not damage the building and still be able to use it.

If you go to this school the normal way, you will find yourself on the west end of the building and in a construction area. This is fine on a Sunday. However the front of the building faces east and that is where you need to go. There is a door there. If you were to put your back to the door, straight ahead and slightly left there are some large pieces of petrified wood. These are about two feet in diameter.

To claim this geocache email the number of pieces of petrified wood that you see. You need not enter the fenced area to answer this. Also, mention one item of information that you find interesting.

Photos are fine. JimReeb@ecentral.com

I was so glad the grass was mowed in a little border around the fencing to make it easy to get around to the east side in my flip flops! (Thank you so much for the tip that I could find the answer without entering the fencing! At first, I was afraid I was going to have to come back when the Water/Sani District was open!) I thought it was interesting that the Water/Sani District isn’t just using the building, but actually built right up against it, incorporating it into the newer structure beside it. I love history caches – they are my favorite! Thank you for the series! Hopefully I’ll get to more of them before long!

This building is in much better shape than most of the old schools, with the downside that you can't get close to it. The property owner is now Pinery Water, and access is along the north side of their fence. TFTV

On a Fall trip through Colorado doing some caching and seeing the sites. A beautiful scenic drive through Rocky Mountain National Park. Visiting the downtown areas of Boulder, Denver, Castle Rock and Colorado Springs to name a few. We enjoyed a beautiful hike on the Barr trail at the Summit of Pikes Peak. It was a wonderful trip with quite a bit of caching thrown in along the way. Thanks for the virtual. Answer sent.

Another Douglas County Virtual find with CShare.

We had a tough time on this one, as the property was behind locked gates and fences. We could see through the fence, and enjoyed the old building and think we were able to answer the questions.

JSQuack and I are back doing more Douglas County caches today.

We were disappointed that this school was totally fenced in and the front gate was locked with an access code on a Sat. We walked through the field to get a look and I will message photos of what we saw. TFTVC

Out with the Ohio GeoBugs for a fun day of caching. What a nice, little area tucked in behind an old, great looking school house! TFTVC!

Out caching for the day with Colorado GeoDemon. Our goal was to find some more of the virtuals in the Douglas County series, some traditionals, a puzzle or two and do a power trail. When we were finished we had gone 57/58. A gorgeous day to be out caching.

We weren’t sure where or how to get to this one. Once we found a way it was easy. Got the needed information which will be sent to the CO.

Thanks for bringing us to this interesting bit of history.
