Dogs  Takes less than an hour  Parking available

Back in the 90s, when I first moved to Evergreen, an old homeless man named Walt was frequently seen about town.  It had been said, "every guy in Evergreen has given ol' Walt a ride once."  My turn was during a fierce spring snowstorm in 1998.  I left work early in the afternoon in Golden but did not take I-70, because traffic was at a standstill.  I took Highway 74 along Bear Creek instead.

Passing through Morrison, in a blinding blizzard, I barely made out a guy who looked a little like Santa Claus standing on the sidewalk with his thumb out.  I pulled over and he climbed in.  He told me he was originally from Texas but had been living in and around Evergreen for years, in "various places."  I asked where he wanted to be dropped off in Evergreen and he asked me if I could take him to Evergreen Drug (now Evergreen Liquors).

When we got there, he told me he did not want to go in, but pulled some cash out of his grungy boot, and asked if I would take the money and buy him a suitcase of beer.  I looked at the dirty bill and said "hey, its’ on me," but he insisted on paying.  So, I gingerly took the $20 and got him his beer (and his change).  It was still snowing hard, so I asked, "where can I drop ya?"  He said Highway 73 and Brook Forest Road.  I knew there was nothing there but a single residence and I doubted it was his.  "Are you sure?  I can take you anywhere downtown."  No, that is where he wanted to be let off, so I dropped him there and watched him disappear onto a wooded path, merely a shadow behind a curtain of snow.

Years later, while geocaching (of course) I discovered this peaceful, secret little valley in Cub Creek Park.  I don’t know where Walt went on that snowy evening, but this geocache location is my best guess.  I like to think that this was his squat up here and imagine the tough old geezer needing nothing more than shelter, maybe a fire, and a case of beer, to get through the storm.

Here's to you, Walt.  You are not forgotten!

12:23:00 PM I had forgotten all about Walt! There were quite a few stories about him. My husband was on the fire department - and they were always getting calls about Walt. Glad there weren't any bears hibernating in that cave! Thanks Wulff Pack

Well, I saw this cache go up a couple of weeks ago and have been waiting for the chance to go get it. That happens to be today Thanksgiving! Who doesn't like a long walk in the snow before a huge Turkey dinner and all the trimmings! Anyhow, I moved up here almost 20 years ago and I remember Walt well. I would see him hitch hiking from Evergreen to Conifer and I once gave him a ride up Shadow Mt. to the Brook Forest Inn where he disappeared into the woods! I'm pretty sure he had a camp site up above our house in the Maxwell falls area. Anyhow I set out from the parking spot, and had to break trail (we recently had a big snow storm) and finally ran into another trail at the top of the drainage that looked to have been packed out by snowshoer's. After that it was a fairly easy find, and a very cool place that looked like you could still have a nice fire under the rock outcropping. Anyhow I was inspired to plant a couple caches of my own out here, to hopefully bring a few more cacher's to this beautiful spot. P.S. Earns a favorite point for the memories!

Thanks for placing this new cache at an interesting location. And for the local story. Jumpy GPS had me going in circles. Left international coin and pen. K7

FTF! Only my 4th one. Log says it was placed 6/30/19. What happened?
GPS consistently put me on the wrong side of the creek. Finally just put it away & used my Geosenses. Retrieval was a Bear. I saw 2 options and didn’t really like either. But for FTF I went for it. Luckily as I approached Walts place I had picked up a large stick in case it was occupied. Stick helped with retrieving cache.
Great story. I’ll have one for you Walt!
