Park at the Gravel Pit (Rainbow) trailhead east of Glen Haven on CR 43. You can also make your way up from downtown Glen Haven, but it's longer and requires a difficult bushwhack. DO NOT attempt this cache if you aren't comfortable climbing high rocks with precipitous drop offs, and don't climb them if they are wet. It's not safe.

The potholes in these rocks have been known as Bath Rock for almost a century. Harry Piper (of Piper Meadows fame) would ride his horse up here over a long-gone trail to take a cooling dip in the pools on a warm summer night.

Potholes are erosion pits that slowly widen and deepen with time. They commonly form in arid environments and are most often found in sandstone, but you can also find them in other silica-rich rocks such as granite and limestone. Although mechanical weathering plays a role in their formation, they contain a biofilm which is the main process by which the depressions expand. Cyanobacteria, fungi, and algae in the film break down siliceous minerals in the rock and suspends them in solution. When the pothole dries out, the fine debris left by this biological activity is carried away by the wind.

Any lifeforms living in a pothole must contend with rapid changes in temperature, pH, O2 and CO2 concentrations, and water content. If you come here in the summer, notice the small creatures that inhabit them, free from predation by larger animals like fish. Residents in this area have reported finding fairy shrimp in the pools.

Thank you for telling me about this neat spot, and for placing a neat cache here! I brought my wife and six-year-old daughter, and they really enjoyed it. In case it interests anyone, here is a photo album I have for the hike on the Crosier Rainbow Trail to the summit of Crosier: http://joeandfrede.com/colorado/crosier_mtn/crosier_mtn.htm I also stopped by the first stage of your "To Boldly Go" multi-cache, but got one of the answers wrong and so couldn't find the second stage (and I am a big Star Trek fan ...) Will have to find stage 2+ the next time I come up here.

Holy Potholes, Batman!!! Or would that be Bathman??? What a cool spot, and interesting location for the actual cache. Glad the rocks were dry, and I did this on the day I did as it rained that night and wouldn't have been much fun the next day. Thanks for showing me this cool place!

Very fun cache. I enjoyed it quite a lot. It would have been nice if the description mentioned that we would be bushwhacking. I took the trail and it got us nowhere, so I walked an extra mile for nothing. I love the location. Thanks for this great cache! SL

Super cache! Gorgeous October morning. Good to get out and stretch the legs. The description is correct. A small bit of climbing where if you fall, it will get very serious. I am not a mountain climber and am cautious about steep stuff and falling. If you are afraid of heights and steep rock, you may get nervous on this one. Good, "grippy" hiking shoes and a dry day and you should be fine. Amazing view from the site! Well worth the effort! TFTC!! :-)
