When Walt Disney was designing his famous theme park Disneyland, one of the designers working with him was Harper Goff, a native of Fort Collins.  Mr. Goff based the design of several buildings located on "Main Street, USA" on buildings here in Fort Collins.  This photo mystery cache will help you discover some of the inspiration that Disneyland was based on.

Some of the buildings in Old Town are still there; others have been demolished.  As you hunt, you will notice that several of the buildings are close replicas, while others show some design elements that have been borrowed and used in different ways.

Many people acknowledge Marceline, MO, where Walt Disney grew up, as the birthplace of Disneyland’s main street, but Fort Collins is very much one of the parents as well.  Marceline may have the street, but Fort Collins is where much of the architecture comes from.

If you are interested in further details, read Main Street Revisited by Richard V. Francaviglia; it's a great resource and where much of the information here was gathered.

The boundaries for your hunt are:

Jefferson Street - both sides.

College Avenue - both sides.

Mountain Avenue - both sides.

Within this area your goal will be to locate the specific site each photo was taken from.  When you find a site, try to stand in approximately the position the photo was taken.  Using your GPS receiver, record the required digit for each photo as indicated below:

N 40.35.X76    X+2=A

W 105.04.5X5   X+5=B

W 105.04.5X4   X+2= C

N 40.35.X67   X+1=D

W 105.04.5X6   X-4= E

N 40.35.3X6   X-3= F

Final Location = N 40.35.ABC  W 105.04.DEF

Checksum A+B+C+D+E+F= 25

The final location is nearby and easily accessible.  It is large enough for travelers and other trade items.

THE ORIGINAL HIDE WAS DESTROYED BY CONSTRUCTION. THE RE-HIDE IS NEARBY, CLOSE TO YOUR CALCULATED COORDINATES. USE THE HINT TO FOCUS ON THE CORRECT SPOT

Owner Maintenance 10/30/2018 By Denali41
After a DNF and a message from another geocacher, I checked on the final today. It was indeed missing. I replaced the container with a fresh log sheet, and removed and properly disposed of the needle that was there. So all is ready with this cache again! Thanks for the heads-up about the possible problem with the cache. Enjoy!!

4:10 PM 2016 JDWorks, JKW and I spent an enjoyable time tracking down the photos and correlating them with the actual edifices in Old Town Fort Collins. The final coordinates led us to another place we were familiar with but did not find the cache as expected so I contacted the CO who kindly advised me that it was indeed missing and gave us permission to log our find. Thanks for the fun and enlightening hunt, adding a well-deserved favorite point. jmike

Looked for this one on 10-21-18 for about 45min with jmike and JWK, after finding all the clues, and still nothing. We found several likely but the only "treasure" to be had was a used needle. Counting this as DNF, but we think it might have been muggled.

After receiving a note from the owner (via jmike) we do indeed get to add a smiley to this one. The best part about reading this cache and visiting all the sites on our tour through Old Town Ft. Collins, was looking through some of the google images to see if we could indeed find these structures in Disneyland... and we did find a few. Thanks so much for the interesting cache and fun!

8:01 on a mild spring morning

I solved this one from my computer in Sacramento, but did look at all the buildings as we drove through old town to make the find. Interesting history!

A rocksolid find.

We are a family on a road trip covering several states. We are caching as "Team WI•OR•CA2" and picking up counties and caches along the way. Individually, we are: 57KHz (my daughter from WI), GoldenStateBoy (my son from Northern CA), UBAD (my brother from Southern CA), and Porkwatch (Oregon).

Thanks to the CO for the effort in creating this cache.
