Meteorite

An early morning Geocacher in northern Douglas County was startled by a bright flash and explosion. A meteorite had fallen.

Three seismic recording stations recorded the fall. You are the technician assigned to discover where the fall occurred and to recover the meteorite. You have gathered the following information:

Different types of seismic waves tend to move at different velocities. The fastest wave is the primary wave, or compressional wave, which is followed in time by the slower secondary wave, or shear wave. They are affected similarly by the materials they cross. As a result, there are relatively constant ratios between the velocities of different pairs of seismic wave types, no matter what kind of material they are passing through. P waves generally travel between 5.95 and 6.75 kilometers per second in the crust, depending on compressibility, rigidity, uniformity, and density of the materials traversed. S waves tend to move at velocities between 2.9 and 4.0 km/sec in the crust.

From previous information you know that P-Waves travel at 6.00 kps and S-Waves travel at 4.00 kps in the area of interest.

Well, you are not allowed to actually take the fake meteorite but there is a container under it to log your find.

There are three Sacagawea coins, one for each of the first three teams to find the cache.

Unrealistic? Consider this: The plane impacts on the WTC towers were recorded several hundred kilometers away. When the towers collapsed, the impact of each floor hitting the one below it was recorded. When flight 93 crashed in rural Pennsylvania, seismology told the authorities that the plane was down and had crashed intact rather than exploding while in the air. There are 16,000 permanently installed stations around the world.

Denali41 and I, along with his Lab puppies Zaba and Chimi, and my Lab puppy Angel had a great caching day in the Castle Rock and south Metro areas today, scoring on a lot of really nice caches.

Our first stop was to do some hiking in Castle Rock's Ridgeline Open Space. After we finished there, we next went to Miller Park. It was definitely a really warm day on the trails! After we we done in the park, we headed for Parker. I had solved this one a couple weeks ago and put it in the file waiting for an opportunity to go for it. So when we planned this trip, it was definitely on the list to find. We arrived at the parking area and set off for GZ. After a bit we left the path and made a beeline for it. Wow, the crater was full of plants that were not fun to walk through! When I got home I spent a good half hour picking those pointy things out of my socks and shoes. Once arriving at the center of the seismic event, we quickly found the gem that the meteor left there. Signed the log and headed back to the parking area. Thanks Jim Reeb for this neat cache!!!

I came across this cache while searching for caches to fill the ‘finds by month hidden’ grid on Project-GC. I was excited to find a puzzle that I could actually solve without assistance and after working for a while, I had coords that looked plausible. I plugged them into the checker and they were wrong. What? I’m sure I did that correctly. Then I read the hint and realized it was just a rounding error and then I got the go ahead from the checker.

Today, after lunch, I had some time to go search for this one. Found parking close to GZ and started my walk. After a bit my phone told me I was within 5 feet so I started looking for the impact crater. After a short search, I spotted something that didn’t seem quite right and soon had the cache in hand.

Earns a favorite from me for the puzzle as I quite enjoyed it. Thanks for keeping this old one alive all these years! TFTC!

I took the day off to grab caches in Parker. I was targeting highly favorited caches. And this fit that category. But, I wanted it for several other reasons too. First, it’s from one of the best puzzle creators I’ve ever seen. Secondly it fills in a Jasmer square for me. I’m slowly getting there! Thirdly, it’s not found very often. But lastly - I was able to solve it without ANY outside help!! I try to do that with all puzzles, but it doesn’t often succeed. This was definitely a challenging but very doable puzzle. Which was perfect. I definitely learned a lot too which was also enjoyable. I found the cache no problem, but the log was still soaked. I replaced the log and added a baggie.

Thanks for keeping this active.

Thanks for the hide Jim Reeb. I appreciate you keeping this cache active for everyone to enjoy.

I had worked this puzzle out and gotten the correct coordinates a while ago. Today on my bike ride, I went really close to GZ on the cache. Once I found it, I realized I forgot my pen (this seems to be a common lately). I plan to ride by GZ a couple of times this week, so I will sign the log on my next trip.

I will admit that I needed a bit of assistance on this puzzle. Fortunately, I know smart people who can hang with other smart people like yourself. As much as it pains me to admit, both Travis of the5millers and herndonrd are smart people. Herndonrd turned out to be the brighter of the two on this one, and was a great "puzzle sherpa" to get us all the way to the finish line.

I enjoyed this puzzle in part because it gets me very close to finally completing the Uber Mystery Challenge. Thanks for the fun puzzle, hide, and for getting me outside on such a beautiful day.

P. S. No animals (humans or otherwise) were harmed in the writing of this log.

This cache has been on the radar for sometime now. After hitting my head against the wall trying to solve ... but no luck. Finally we reached out to Herndon for some help. He gave us a nudge but still we looked like this deer in headlights. Today Bob, Joe and I met up to figure this out. Finally we understand it and off to find the cache. When we reached the GZ we made quick work of the find. Thanks for another great puzzle!!
Keeping our streak alive. Thanks for placing this cache and keeping our recreation going. SL/with PoshCacher/MagicCacher.Tftc

Did the math and then needed a little help from the CO with the checker. Walked right up to the cache. Another fun puzzle. TFTC!

I can't believe after all these years I was finally able. To find that meteorite. With geocaching toolbox available I knew I could solve the 2nd part but was still struggling how to get the missing info. With a hint from the CO I found what I felt was a good answer but that darn checker threw me off, but it worked for the CO so I plugged the same numbers in again & this time success. My family has a very long history with the nearby area & I hope it doesn't change any more than it already has (but I imagine it will).

Another great puzzle! Wondered if I was in the correct spot when I saw that I was standing on the cache. SL.

While others were out jumping from shopping center to shopping center to score the best Black Friday deals, T&A137 and I went to find some puzzles and other caches we have had on our radar. Just a slight breeze this morning and the temperatures were rising just enough to take care of the rest of that leftover snow and make the ground a little muddy or slippery depending on where we were.

Thanks to "A" from T&A for some much needed math that was a little over "T" and my head(s). I have had a goal to get your puzzles completed this winter, Jim. So I am happy to finally get this one off my naughty list. Stellar work here Jim as usual. One down, many more to go! Thanks for a fun puzzle!

This was a real fun idea for a puzzle! A got to show off her math skills (yet again) on this one. Really good hide too. TFTF

Doing a cache maintenance run. Log was wet because the lid was not being correctly replaced. Replaced the container and log. Hope it helps.

Had solved this one a while back, had a little "wobble" depending on rounding. Had come up here and searched about but missed GZ and needed to re-check my calculations (yes, rounding is important on this one, more than about any cache I've done). After rechecking and refining numbers and getting consistent checks I stored this one away till I was passing by and remembered it (longer than I care to think of, to many things on a poor pohka's mind at times). As I was going through DIA I had a big question on where I wanted to go and pick up a puzzle or two and as I was debating between North Denver and the Aurora/Parker area this one poped up; must get!!! Got to the area and did the quick walk to GZ, was happy to see they'd mowed the area because it made GZ a little more obvious (now I now why I missed it earlier, had been off 20-40 feet before and distracted by other possible locations). Very nicely done sir, very nicely done!!
