found the burl yesterday after making access on the old road that took some flood damage. unfortunately the homestead is missing after the high park fire destroyed it....but for now the old wood stove remains and is adequate for finishing the instructions.

I'm really behind in logging my finds.....found this one while on a jeeping trip with Team Red Rubicon back in October....and with lots of help from Team Laxson, kingjr, zoltig, and Red Ruby.

As with a prior cache, I found this one with a lot of help from Team Laxson, kingjr, zoltig, and Red Ruby.
We had a great day jeeping Old Flowers Road. I'm glad the road is open again!
Thanks!

The contents of the cache melted just a little

Old Flowers Road has just opened after being closed for over 2 years. The trail and scenery have changed quite a bit since I was last up here. Wow. This whole area got hit with a 1-2 punch with the fire and flood. It was a long day of driving, hiking, researching, and re-learning these roads. This was my first time driving Old Flowers all the way through.
After stopping at the Old Ranch and checking out the container, it looked pretty much the same as I remember it from my find on that one a few years back. Granted, whatever is chewing on it is slowly making progress, but it's what I remembered. The Lewis Ranch is still there albeit a bit overgrown. The garage is gone, but my original 4x4 is still there :-)
Heading out to the Burl was an interesting drive. I think the hike would have been easier. But we were able to get to where the cabins once were, now only a wood burning stove is left. As icezebra11 noted, the contents got a bit melted and the paper scarred, but it did survive remarkably well. Signed in with the melted pen and continued our day on Old Flowers road, checked on more caches and surveying the land.

This cache has been way too lonely so I had to see about changing that today. I left my home in Loveland about 7 am and after stopping for gas and some coffee to wake up, headed up Poudre Canyon. At about 8:45 I first stopped and took a short warm-up hike to sign one of Denali41's Near the Boundary caches. I got to the Old Flowers locked gate off Pingree Park Road at 9:30 and set out up the road. Old Flowers is still closed to vehicles but is open to hiking, and I had a long hike in front of me. It was a beautiful day in the high country with only a few scattered clouds and the temperature didn't get much above 70. It was a long walk to the point that I had plotted for the final location, over 6 1/4 miles one way, through miles of scorched forest. As I arrived at GZ for The Old Ranch I was worried that the container may be toast as all the trees were burnt from the High Park fire in 2012. After searching for about 20 minutes and coming up empty I rechecked my coordinates. When I plugged the coordinates into my GPSr I must have fat fingered a couple digits on the longitude because it turns out I was 150 ft away from where I needed to be. After that correction I moved to my new GZ and began searching. Voila! The container was there and it survived the High Park Fire!!! It didn't have any burn marks on it at all but it did have evidence of a rodent chewing on it quite a bit! I opened it to find the inner container was fully intact. I put a fresh signature in the log book and retrieved the Jeep TB that has been hiding out too long.
After putting things back in place I climbed up on the rock, marked my position, and projected my waypoint for The Burl. With that done I headed off in search of that one. After hiking through more scorched trees, and a nice meadow, I arrived at my projected waypoint. Sad to say that there are no buildings as referenced on the cache page, the fire must have destroyed what was left. I was worried that now I may have to head home without this one because there was still two more projections to make. I also was worried that the magnetic bearing gremlins were going to mess with me as it has been 9 years since this cache was placed and mag bearings change over time. I figured I'd try to find the burl anyway and after doing another projection, I could find no burl in the area. Was it the fire or was it the gremlins? I still had another bearing and distance to project too. No buildings, no burl, and burnt trees, I wasn't feeling very good about the situation. But I was in an area that looked like it could hold a cache so I began searching the nooks and crannies. About 5 minutes into my search I had to do a double take! The container was found!!! It looked ok on the outside but when I opened the lid it was obvious the container got very hot. Everything that was plastic was melted and the log book was singed around the edges. But I could still turn the pages and I was able to sign the log. What a sense of excitement and accomplishment to come up with the cache under the severely altered conditions. Thanks Tahosa for this great cache, it was fun figuring it out. When you get back up this way you'll have to get to this area to see the charred landscape, it's a whole different place from when you last saw it. Over 16 miles of hiking today and just about 3500 feet of elevation gain to get 3 caches, I'm beat!

Working on a test log for my upcoming 1,000 finds. Will delete it when it log occurs and it is posted next week. And this will probably send some bells & whistles to Denali41
I started Geocaching on 9/09/2001 and within 17 days on 9/26/2001 days I placed my first hide in Colorado known as ~Lions Ridge GC1F08~. And 7 days later on 10/03/2001 I found my ~first cache~ with my nine year old son Corey. And we still have the compass (swag) from that cache. Several years later I adopted my first find, re-hid it on ~Crosier Mountain~. And that mountain is now home to many back country ~Caches~. One of my favorite caches is ~Anne's Overlook~ and it has some of the finest scenery in CO. Many of my caches were hidden while I was on a Forest Service patrol with ~PWV~.
So after a wonderful journey of 11 years, 7 months, 1 week and 1 day (4238 days) I have finally found my 1,000th geocache!! Some may wonder why so long? The answer is quite simple I prefer to ~hide~ caches instead of look for them.
My caching moniker comes from the historical ~Tahosa Valley~, in CO. In 2005 I placed the first stage of one of Colorado's first 5x5 caches known as the ~Chef's Special~, and this cache also has a reference to this ~sailor~ who was on the USS Arizona on Dec.7, 1941 So its only fitting that this find is done on a virtual that has some deep meanings.
Some of my caches are done with a 4 wheeler instead of boots on the trail, these caches are in an area known as ~Poverty Flats~.

Please stay away from the cache till either myself or Denali41 give the Ok to enter the area. And I can imagine this will not happen until the summer of 2013.
~WARINING-area is closed till further notice!!!~

Love this "nested" multi-cache where you have to find one multi to start looking for the next... :-) Thanks for getting me to such a nice area, and thanks for the fun caches!

Attempted to go pay a visit to this one again today after not seeing this cache for a few years, but lacking the needed winch for pulling ourselves back up a solid sheet of ice, we backed out a 1/4 mile to a turn around point instead of tempting fate, and chainless tires...will try to stop by next year when the roads are dry to check on things.

Once I found the "The Old Ranch" and saw the answers for questions #1 & #2, I pretty much said, "Forget it" to myself, since I was without the benefit of a vehicle. However, the side of my brain that had been plotting this caching excursion for the past year refused to let go of the original plan. Onward my feet carried me. Had some trouble distinguishing which building was which, but after a bit of exploring and experimenting, the cache was located finally. TNLN SL More info about the hike is recorded at my log for "The Old Ranch". This is a great area!
