Congratulations to GoMRT - First to Find!

Cheyenne Mountain State Park includes most of the land around one of the three summits of Cheyenne Mountain. Although it isn't the highest summit, the hike is a real challenge — over 15 miles round trip from the main parking lot in the Park — but the views are unmatched from the 3.5-mile figure-eight loop at the top.
The cache is located just off the trail near the midpoint of the Dragon's Backbone. Although the cache location does not pose any danger, rangers have issued warnings, ranking this trail difficult to extreme due to ruggedness and exposure. But there were a surprising number of hikers using the loop. You can do it too! There is a benchmark nearby, but sadly it does not appear to be in geocaching.com's database.
PARK ONLY IN DESIGNATED LOTS...DO NOT PARK ALONG THE ROADWAY OR IN FRONT OF LOCKED GATES. Day use fee or Colorado State Park pass required. No dogs are allowed on these trails. Horses and bicycles are allowed up to the 2.5-mile mark on Dixon Trail but you'll have to hike the remainder.

This cache is placed by permission of Senior Ranger Darcy Mount. Please be respectful of all surroundings and stay on established trails. All the twists and turns of the trail system have been designed to get you safely through the terrain and to protect the wildlife habitat. There is nothing to be gained by trying to take a shortcut. If there is any problem with the cache, please note it in your log.
