When I was a kid in school I thought rocks were about as boring as it gets. It wasn’t until I started looking at rocks as having a “story” that everything changed. I remember one particular day when my dad took me out John Day Oregon.

The hills were washed in color, and you could clearly see layers in the rock. It was all Sedimentary Rock, having been formed under an ancient sea.  The idea of Eastern Oregon being underwater seemed otherworldly as a child.  I had never seen an environment so UN-ocean like. My father and I climbed some weak rock until we got to what my father called the “John Day Fossil Bed.”  We probed the side of the rock looking for little flecks of white.  These flecks were the sure signs of bone underneath.  We stayed there digging for hours and came up with small mammal fossilized skull, numerous plant and leaf fossils, and finally a large set of teeth from the long extinct Rhino called Telataceras radinskyi.  Every rock has a story. That story can be absolutely astounding if you embrace it.

Another awesome day and I just couldn't let the great weather go to waste. I just needed a few more caches to reach the 5000 milestone. I took a long lunch to enjoy some great scenery and a few caches. TFTC
