In 1861-1865 the United States found itself in one ofthe worst wars
in its history. 600,000 Americans lost their lives.
.
Lying in this hallowed ground are many soldiers who fought in this
great war.
One of them was an Arkansas born soldier by the name of Seaburn Z.
Caughman. His grave is closest to this cache. He was born in
Washington County, Arkansas in 1843. This county is in the NW
corner of Arkansas close to the Missouri boundary.
The state of Arkansas seceded from the union in 1861 and joined the
confederacy, but many young men felt that they wanted to remain
with the union.
Seaburn had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. He and 4 of his brothers
joined Company A, 1st Arkansas Calvary (union); Andrew,35,
William,22, Seaburn and twin brother Nathan,19 and Nelson,18. His
brother Nelson was killed at the battle of Rayes Mill in Arkansas
in April,1864. Three brothers Andrew, Nathan and William joined the
1st Arkansas 14 May 1862, while Seaburn joined 13 June 1862. Being
too young Nelson didn't join until 31 October 1862. All the
brothers being familiar with horses decided to join the Calvary.
There enlistment actually began in Springfield, Mo. This is where
the battle of Wilson Creek was fought.
Some of the battles fought by the 1st Arkansas Calvary(union) were:
Prairie Grove, Dec.7,1862(confederates driven back), Battle of
Fayetteville, Arkansas. They were also involved in many skirmishes,
patrols and guerrilla activities. Equipment issued for the Calvary
were McCollum saddles, bridles, rifles, sabers and pistols. They
began with 2600 horses but only 104 survived. In Co.A,1st Arkansas
Calvary(union) 110 soldiers were KIA and 235 died of disease.
Seaburn mustered out in August,1865. He then moved West because of
the mining boom and settled in the town of Hillside. Hillside was
the town where many ex-soldiers were hoping to get rich. In 1875,
he married Anne A. Holliday. Seaburn died in March,1879 at the age
of 36.

Trivia: The Arkansas flag had 3 stars in its center diamond at
the beginning of the war. One star for each of the countries that
at one time claimed the land known as Arkansas were Spain, France,
and the U.S. After the Civil War, the Arkansas legislature voted to
add a fourth star on top representing the Confederacy.
