Get ready for a fright. This cache series is not for the faint of heart. This spooky season explores some of the Colorado Springs area's most haunted locations with the Haunted Cache series.
The Gold Camp Road Tunnels were constructed during the 1800s to help support the ongoing Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. Connecting Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs, a railway was laid down on the route that is now Gold Camp Road. There were a total of three tunnels constructed along the Gold Camp route. During the construction of the railroad and tunnels, many workers died. It is perhaps these spirits that haunt the tunnels today. Hikers passing through and around the tunnels have experienced unexplained scratches on their bodies and hearing laughter near the tunnels.
There is also a persisting ghost story involving the 3rd tunnel's collapse. It is said a school bus full of children collided with the tunnel, causing its collapse and the death of all the children and the driver. There is a terrifying tradition that brings believers into contact with the ghosts of the Gold Camp Road Tunnels. At night, drive into the second tunnel and turn off the car. Believers have reported hearing laughter in the dark tunnel, and seeing tiny handprints appear on the car. I believe it because it happened to my friends and I many years ago. We even felt a presence pushing the car. There was no more haunting experience than that...
Only brave geocachers will find this haunted cache as you must travel through the haunted second tunnel...
(You can easily drive to this location and park on the pullout before the tunnel and walk through to the cache. Or you can park at the Upper Gold Camp parking lot past Helen Hunt Falls and take a nice hike down Gold Camp Road to the tunnel.)
