Home Station in the series of caches called "Chasing the Rails" of The Rio Grande Southern Railroad. This Cache is in the area of the old Durango Station. There is a log in a small container about 4" long and will hold small TB's and Coins for travel. PLEASE Replace how you found it, well covered is how I placed it. Thank You!
This cache you can sit right next to on the rocks and look and the river while you look for all the mugglers and there is a lot of them, watch out for the Park Ranger dude in his little 4 wheeler, never mind the Parking Guy at Albertsons as he see nothing, as you were now. But if any one ask what you are doing. You are "Chasing the Rails" of The Rio Grande Southern Railroad of course.

This area (Albertson's and the Double Tree Properties) is where the old Durango Station was located for the Rio Grand Southern, on this location was the old Grain Mill, Lumber Yard, Cattle Yard, Brennan Bulk Oil and the Rail Yard, from here you could get a ride to Telluride and Ridgeway, the mail and supplies for the Ride and Ridgeway went out of this station.

Here is a Map of the Rio Grand Southern http://oi62.tinypic.com/c0v13.jpg

The Rio Grande Southern was one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railroads in the world. It provided heavy transportation service for the west side of the San Juan mountains and traveled through spectacular scenery that, prior to the railroad, was only accessible by the most determined traveler using horses, wagons, or even basic foot power.

The Rio Grande Southern Railroad (RGS) ran from Durango to Ridgway in the western part of the US state of Colorado. Its right of way can be traced by going west from Durango to Mancos, then to Dolores, north across Lizard Head Pass (10,222') to Placerville, with the final leg to Ridgway. The route passed over Dallas Divide west of Ridgway and over Lizard Head Pass north of Rico. The most famous structure on the route was the Ophir Loop near Ophir. At this point the railroad was built up a narrow mountain valley and looped back up the other side to gain elevation over several tall trestles.

The RGS filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission for abandonment on 24 April 1952. Details for Benchmarks: None listed in this area.

This page shows Remnants of the Rio Grande Southern Out Along The Line that are still standing. "http://rgs.railfan.net/remains.html"

A good find with Liquidelle, BriGuy on our Labor day weekend grabbing caches trip. We covered over 20 counties over the three day weekend and even got to dip into Utah. Good traveling as one of the SWAC crew, Best Wishes, DustyRiver
