CONGRATULATIONS TO 2xblack FOR FTF!!

A mountain having an elevation of 10,020 feet rises abruptly to the southwest of Poudre Falls, a notable landmark along Colorado Highway 14 in the upper reaches of Poudre Canyon. The top of Point 10,020 is only 0.6 mile from Poudre Falls, yet there’s about 1,800 feet of "verticality" in this short distance! The mountain is also the prominent terrain feature above the Big South Trailhead, a bit farther up the canyon from the Falls. Its rocky escarpments are a dominating visual scene from either of these canyon waypoints. Point 10,020 is one of Larimer County’s Ranked Peaks. According to records on listsofjohn, few climbers or hikers have visited its summit.

Beginning today, there’s an added enticement for you to reach the top of this neat mountain: there’s a geocache hidden adjacent to the summit, awaiting your visit! It’s a good-sized Rx bottle containing a cache log. There’s no room in the cache for a pen or pencil, so you’ll need to bring your own to record your conquest. The container’s hidden in a space between two rocks that are isolated from the plethora of other rocks in the summit vicinity, and these two rocks are covered by a natural placement of a flat rock that conceals the container. As an aid for your search (of what should become a fairly easy find), these rocks are within 3 feet of an isolated ground juniper. Now that’s a real spoiler...

Be certain that you have sufficient time to reach the summit of Point 10,020 and its cache. Plan your route well. Be careful. It will excite you when you arrive and locate the container. And budget enough time to return to your vehicle with decent light, where ever you decide to park!

Denali Queen and I tried for this peak in the winter several years ago. After 7 hours of extreme effort we turned back, vowing to return in summer months, which we did. And this time, when no snow was present, Silver Trekker, my puppy Teewinot, and I made the top with little problem. But it took some time! Silver Trekker signed the cache log, but she is NOT claiming the FTF because she was with me at the time of cache placement. The FTF is "available". Go for it. Have fun with this one...you will earn it.

It was a beautiful day in the high country. I parked at the Lost Lake parking area on Laramie River Rd and hiked in on the Green Ridge jeep trail. Denali41's Twin Lakes cache was still waiting for someone to sign its log in the FTF position so that was first on the "must find" list for today. After making the find on that one I set off to the east up the mountainside to find this cache. The GPSr showed it was less than a mile as the crow flies but as the cacher hikes, it was easily more than a mile - all bushwacking. I slowly picked my way up to the top of the ridge and then headed north for ground zero. Got to the cache coordinates and the bottle was right there, tucked in its hiding spot in excellent shape. Signed the log and ate a sandwich while taking in the great views to the west, NW, and SW. Thanks Denali41!

Well this one was a challenge of vertical will. My girlfriend and I managed to find what i believe was the easiest approach. There was a lot of downed trees to navigate on an incline that made you feel like your face was close enough t the ground do push ups. Rather basic ultra steep no trail hiking until the last .3 miles. Then there was the mosquito infested moat and increased amount of downed trees to navigate around followed quickly by the near vertical wall. We managed to make it to the top in 1.32 miles and it only took 1:55. Oh and then there was the down, that was entertaining as well. TFTC.

Wow what a hike, I'll be sore tomorrow, got the FTF, the cache was out in the open, replaced where the description said it should be. Saw some hare's at the top hiding in all the blown down trees. Thanks for your hard work placing this cache Denali!!
