This Geocache is located along the Abyss trail, north of Grant, at an elevation of 10200 feet.

The original cache has been cache-napped so for a while this will be a virtual. No geocaches may be hidden in this wilderness area so I will not replace it. When placed, there was no sign designating this as a wilderness area. Time seems to change things, even in the boonies.

Grant is located on HW285 about ten miles west of Bailey. Take the road northward out of Grant. The road will go from paved to dirt. The dirt road will last for about four miles and go back to paved. Shortly thereafter you will cross a cattle guard and at that point you will be looking at where you should park. N39 30.662 W105 42.643 Elevation 9650 feet. About one mile of the dirt road is private. Just before reaching the private area is a nice campground that has restroom and picnic facilities.

The trail is a well maintained trail. Long ago it was a jeep trail and at that time I drove a VW to the first stream that you come to. At that time there was a bridge and you can still see the remains of it. The second and larger stream has a bridge and is about .12 miles from where the cache was. To claim this cache, email the number of logs used to construct the bridge. Stay on the trail until you are well within 500 feet of the cache area. A little past the bridge and on the left (north) is a beautiful view of Geneva mountain. If you have binoculars along, take a careful look along the top of the right hand ridge. Hike time to bridge, 50 Minutes.

The old cache location has been replaced with crossed sticks close to a large rock behind a bush. There is a nice rock to sit on about twenty feet away.

Remember, this is now a virtual.

From the parking area there is another geocache to the west that is a nice hike.

What can I say?!?! This was the last Jim Reeb virtual cache that I needed (only need one more traditional for them ALL). Decided to finally grab this one for my 10,000th find!!!

Bhob and I ended up doing seven miles of hiking today. Great day for it, and we only got rained on a few times.

Loved this area, and took a fun milestone picture using some trackables. Photo attached. Definitely gets a favorite from me. I have loved all of your virtuals, well, all of your caches really.

Thanks for the adventure, and for keeping this one active for so long.

When I published “Colorado’s Virtual Matrix Challenge” in 2010 there were 170 still-active Virtual caches within the state. I set a personal goal of finding each of them. It’s been a long process involving some exciting adventures, and I’m still two caches shy of having found all 170 (of which 162 are still active). The two I have left are actually easy ones that are reasonably close to home compared to many that I’ve chased down over the years. Before this morning I had three to find–those two and this wonderful Virtual. “Abyss” was always just a bit too far off US 285 for me to go after late in the days I drove down the highway after very full climbing or caching agendas farther west or south. So it was always one of those that I proclaimed “next time” as I passed south of it. Well, “next time” always became, again, “next time” until I finally prioritized things today, making certain that while I was getting some other caches off Guanella Pass Road I would also be certain to program in this hike.

I’m certainly happy that I did! My puppies Orizaba and Chimborazo were with me, and they, also, appreciated the hike on the Abyss Trail. We had made a couple of other hikes earlier in the day in fairly challenging terrain, and it was nice to close things out on a gentle trail in this beautiful area approaching the western base of Mt. Bierstadt. It was hot. The dogs were VERY happy when we finally reached Scott Gomer Creek. They plunged in and drank and drank. Meanwhile, I was counting logs. My answer will soon be on its way to Jim Reeb. Thanks so very much for keeping this wonderful Virtual active. These Virtuals are precious–they are true treasures; it’s a shame when any of the older Virtual caches gets archived.

My not so brave coonhound gained some confidence and crossed this bridge like a true rock star. We packed up and camped at Helms Lake and then hiked to Abyss Lake. This is such a beautiful area. Thanks for the cache and the adventure.

Jim. I have had this one on my list for 14 years. Mary and I drove from Austin. On our way to Breckenridge we made a detour to hike this amazing trail. Just love the old ones. Vort.

A beautiful day to be out and about on Guanella Pass, there are still a few spots of nice aspen color. A very nice hike up to this one, I didn't see anybody on the way up and only saw a few others on the way down. The aspen were all done up here, but some huge areas that must've been awesome a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, the trailhead parking lot will open soon. Cheers!

Hiking with the ladies, trying to beat the rain. We made it to this location (well short of Abyss Lake) and decided to turn back before the rain came. It came about 30 mins before we reached the cars, but only a sprinkle. The real rain came on the drive home...so we timed it perfectly. Love this area!!! Too bad it's now wilderness, so free of conventional cache's. Nevermind, we enjoyed the hunt for this virtual one. TFTC! Will email answer to your question.
