Located in Paint Mines Park near Calhan. The colorful clays exposed here in unique formations have been used as paints for thousands of years.

The cache is a sealed flip-top container with room for a few small trade items. Part of the challenge is to find the right path into the cache. Snake your way through a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

Look in the crack behind a thin vertical rock on the south side of the passageway. The cache is covered with a couple of fist-sized rocks and is visible from the right angle. It is in the gold-colored layer. There is no need to climb to the top of the rocks (the Park discourages this); just squeeze through a narrow gap.

From Colorado Springs, take Hwy 24 to Calhan. Turn south on Yoder St at the east end of town. Turn left on Paint Mines Rd and follow that to the park.

Probably, much like others I popped
Back and forth, Wondering what south means. Knowing the color spurred me in the right direction. At this point I had abandoned my family, because they were too slow so once I found it and signed, I had to run to catch them. Turtle thanks from California! Fun adventure and I liked driving back the long way through the windmills just for fun. Great little adventure.

Final find in this park. It sure has changed since I went on the guided hike when the land was 1st acquired before it was open to the public. So surprised at the number of people out here for a Tuesday!

A day full of contrast: first the visit of Pikes Peak, then at the late afternoon we visited the Painted Mines. The delicate colors and shades looked so pretty. And the pictures have an almost unnatural intensity of color, no Photoshop enhacements required...

On a family trip with HendrickClan to Calhan to visit Paint Mines for a little hiking, jogging and cache finding on a cool and windy morning. Tough find. Several false attmpts up nearby canyons. Difficult scramble to well concealed cache. SL
