Today my puppy Teewinot and I hiked to the top of Quigley Mountain. We were enjoying a bright, warm day, and we had plenty of time. I looked over the surrounding countryside to choose a destination that might be “new” for me. And I spied the Little South, far below us. I’d heard some fine stories from avid fly fishermen about the marvelous, remote valley of the South Fork of the Cache La Poudre in the vicinity east of Quigley and had always planned to see it first-hand, but never had done so. And today we had time for some exploration!

So we began our fairly steep descent from the summit and eventually reached the Little South. Wow! It lives up to its reputation for beauty and roughness of terrain, and fly fishing here in this location so distant from roads must be superb! A faint dirt trail used by sportsmen was evident in some places, fading or vanishing in the grassy meadows and in areas where cliffs forced us up onto steeper, rocky areas. The entire setting was sort of magical.

Clearly, this place deserved a geocache that might attract some adventurous seekers into this marvelous place. If you are in this category of cachers, you will be looking for a good-sized Rx cylinder that does not contain a pencil or pen, so bring your own. Look up along the edge of the meadow and note several rectangular rocks that jut up parallel to one another in the GZ vicinity. Search in a rock overhang. Enjoy your discovery of the Little South and of this cache!

Nice one! The wife and I did not want to go over the mountain, so we went around the long way. Nice hike in gorgeous country. The aspens were in full yellow and gold for fall. Mild temps and sunny skies. Too nice. Very scenic area to hike back into. Well worth going after! TFTC!!

After riding to & finding Quigley we continued to follow the two track around and down to the river. Lots of downfall to work our way around but I thought it was worth it. Such a beautiful valley! We rode down to the river about 10 years ago before any fires and it looked very different today. I would love to pack in & camp here some day but probably won't get that lucky. We had a very interesting ride out too. The trees were just beautiful.

In the area checking out the damage from the fire and flood. Wow, this area has changed quite a bit. We wound up passing this one up on our way in, but made a point to stop on our way back out. Quick find for us today, and we're OK with that. I didn't think to bring a pen with, so we attempted to sign with a charred piece of wood we found nearby. Not sure how well we did though.

Came to the Jack's Gulch area today to find some caches that have been on my wanted list. After logging Piggly Quigley I headed down the ridge to this beautiful spot. I'm not a fisherman but this would be a great spot to wet a line. The description on the cache page was helpful as my GPSr had me about 30 feet higher on the hill side. But I eventually found the little bugger and signed the log. Because nookiechick attached a photo proving the find, I entered their name on the log above mine. Thanks Denali41 for placing this cache in a beautiful river valley.

Recently the USFS reopened the area where this cache is located to public access. So today I made the hike to the cache to make a post-fire status check on it. The fire did not damage the container and log sheet, so this one's available for seekers again. This was the 30th of my 32 caches in the High Park Wildfire area that I've been able to check. It's nice to have some, such as this cache, that don't require repair or replacement!
