Have you ever wanted to cache next to a real castle?  Well now you can! This cache can be accessed along the Bear Creek Trail, either from Corwina Park to the West, or Lair o the Bear to the east.  The cache itself is hidden a short distance off the trail, after a brief climb.  This is a very popular place for muggles to stop and take pictures, so please be stealthy and re-hide it well!  GPS is super bouncy so pay close attention to the hint. You are searching for my FIRST EVER AMMO CAN hide! Happy Hunting!

History of the Castle: A water engineer named Marcus Wright originally designed this incredible and breath-taking property.  He started the development in 1929 and completed it in 1941.  Mr. Wright built the Castle himself using the narrow gauge railroad he installed to haul native granite and concrete to the property.  Due to the fact that there was no electricity in Bear Creek Canyon at the time, he fashioned an electrical generating facility using the overshoot water wheel. Mr. Wright fashioned the castle after Celtic Castles of the 13th century, he included many features one would find in those ancient castles.  These features include the amazing turrets, the handmade light fixtures, the tunnels, the thick rock walls, and the arched center, double paned, pivot windows, even a dungeon.  Mr. Wright died of cancer and the castle changed hands and fell into disrepair over time until the current owners 4th and 5th generation Jefferson County natives took over.  It is now a popular wedding and reception venue.

Found it after taking the worst way up the hill side! We only fell a couple times.

Went for a long drive today, from eastish Aurora to downtown Evergreen - this was the last of five geocaches that I found along the way - second visit here in less than a month - at least this time around, I knew what to expect in the way of road closures, and how to work my way around them. TN-LN-SL.

An ammo can! A nice fall day. A castle. Can't get much better than this! I parked at Little Park and walked to the cache. Thanks! The girls did a great job painting the ammo can.

Ftf! Awesome cache and swag. I'll grab the two tbs and move them along. I'll be back with my son at some point

This morning I decided to check the latest caches and I came across this one! I'm so excited to get my first FTF! Unfortunately, I had no cell phone coverage in the area so I wasn't able to log it on the spot with the application. Speaking of which . . .

I would recommend that you get your signal before you head into the area. Specifically get the compass working so that you can use GPS. When I did my first attempt this morning, I was frustrated to find that I had absolutely no cell coverage, I hadn't looked at the hint (not that it does any good without the coordinates), and I hadn't downloaded the information. I had come in through Lair o' the Bear and had to head back to my car and drive until I could pick up a signal. I made it almost all the way to Evergreen and then turned around and headed back. I made sure to keep the application on the compass and I had no problem maintaining the GPS signal.

I actually found that my GPS signal was quite good and had no problem finding the location of the cache. However, you should be prepared to work for this! You definitely need to get off the trail and do some climbing. I would definitely rate the terrain higher than a 2.5.

The cache is awesome with amazing swag! I grabbed the two TBs and will move them down the hill to some new premium locations. I'll be back another time with my son so that he can make the find as well.

Earns a favorite! Thanks for this wonderful cache. It's been so long since I hiked this trail and had a look at the castle.

FYI: If you want to make the trip shorter, Corwina park is closer than LotB if you use the lot that is further East. In fact, you can even go past that lot and there are a couple pullouts you can use to park even closer. However, I would recommend that you start at LotB and enjoy the still relatively short hike!
