Cowboy was on his way to Dolores to file a Spanish Land Grant claim on some new property. He had won the grant fair and square in a poker game. He looked up to see dust rise from the draw he intended to cross on the trail. He immediately became suspicious as two hired hands that were not very happy about losing the poker game to Cowboy. Maybe they were out to get even? Maybe they would try to kill him?
Cowboy led his horse off the trail and slowly worked his way toward the draw. He got his 45-70 Winchester rifle and slowly crept up to the edge of the rock rim. Sure enough, the two cowpokes were squatted behind some bushes. Cowboy yelled down, "Are you looking for me?" Cowboy had the drop on them and told them to throw their guns into the brush. He fired a shot at the ground between their feet for good measure. "Yikes!!!!", they hollered "We didn't mean you no harm". While holding his gun on the cowpokes he had them take off their boots and give them to him. Then Cowboy released their horses, and then fired a shot into the air to send them a running. "Hope you gents enjoy your walk back to Dolores". He added, "I will be waiting for you, that is, if you decide you want some more trouble". Cowboy climbed into his saddle and hightailed it again toward Dolores to file his claim.
