Cowboy was in a bar in Dolores playing poker. He drew a good hand of cards and won a large pot. Part of the pot included a worn leather pouch. After the game Cowboy stepped outside and noticed writing inside with lots of symbols and dotted lines. He carefully cut open the stitching to expose a map. It was written in Spanish.
Cowboy took the leather map to his friend Beto to translate. Beto said this is an old Spanish land grant map. It is dated and signed and the land belongs to the bearer of the deed and map so the land is yours if you can find it. The directions show it to be SW of the Dolores River about 10 miles. Cowboy said “Thanks, I have ridden through that land before. Nice land to raise pasture but it is dry land and there is no water source except rain and runoff.” Beto looked at the map again and said that is not what the map indicates. There is an old underground spring in a rocky bank. If you clear it out I bet you can get water there. Cowboy said goodbye and headed out to the area. Sure enough there was water seeping out of the rocks. Cowboy dug deeper and the flow increased. There surely would be enough to water livestock and maybe if he made a pond there might be enough to irrigate some land. Cowboy hightailed it to Dolores to register his claim. He had a new ranch!!!
