#5 in the series dedicated to Gold Country and the people who wrestled the earth to extract a life and perhaps a fortune from it. Sometimes they won, often times they lost.
Nestled high in the saddle between California Mountain and Colorado mountain, American city was laid out as a town in the late 1890's. Eastern capitalists invested in the area with hopes of large returns from the new gold discoveries and the town boasted a school to accommodate children from the towns, the Mascot Mill, a hostelry, and the Hotel Del Monte. Within a few years the gold played out and the miners moved on. This wasn't the end of American City though. In 1911 the site was chosen by the Selig-Polyscope Picture Company for realistic mountain settings for a western film.
The actual location of American City is due west up the mountain from the cache. The area is private property and is still home to some residents who live there year round. Many maintain summer residences as the winters can be harsh.
