This geocache is placed as close as I could to the historic Strater Hotel.  Many films have been shot in the gilded lobby of the Strater, but none more important to me than National Lampoon's Vacation.  Even if you are a fan of the movie, you might not recognize this as a filming location, the Grizwolds never visited Durango in the movie.  However, the film crew did roll through town on their epic road trip and they found the Strater lobby perfect for the indoor scene where Clark faces off with an officious desk clerk who refuses Clark's personal check, unless he stays another 7 or 8 business days for the check to clear (those who are old enough may remember that commerce really was this primitive back in the 1980s).

The exterior shots that followed were actually filmed at the El Tovar Hotel, adjacent to the rim of the Grand Canyon.  That was where Clark finds his family, staring blissfully into the void of the canyon, and Clark gives it a two-second perfunctory peek before hustling them into the Family Truckster and fleeing the scene of the crime.

We rode the train yesterday, so it’s nice to be back up close again and see them again. These types of hides are very popular back home. I signed my initials BC on the small log. TFTC
