Another Julie Andrews moment! There is a SPECTACULAR view awaiting you at the cache (woo hoo!). You'll need a 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive high-clearance vehicle with a good low gear. The last 1/2 mile of the road absolutely requires 4-wheel drive, and the last 1/4 mile is DANGEROUS to drive -- very steep and rubbly. However, there are places to park so you can hike up to the cache. Elevation at the cache is 9400'.
This cache is challenging to get to, but well worth the effort. Upper Lost Canyon Road is closed in the spring until May 15th. Lost Canyon Road (CR 743) is accessible from HWY 135 via CR 10. Take Lost Canyon Road 3.5 miles to Forest Service Road 3219 (see waypoint chart). This road is rough and rocky, and requires a bit of 4-wheeling skill. The cache is 1 mile up this road, but it is NOT recommended to try to drive all the way! The final hike up the road to the cache is very steep and rubbly, but you can make it easier on yourself by zig-zagging through the forest to get there.
You can see for miles at the cache! You may want to bring a lunch, sit there for awhile and admire the view. In the foreground is Crested Butte, Round Mtn, Signal Peak, Red Mtn, Flat Top Mtn, and the Palisades of the Gunnison River. In the distance is Tomichi Dome, Carbon Peak, the Anthracite Range, Razor Creek Dome, Uncompahgre Peak, and much more. The cache is on a cliff of volcanic tuff which is the result of an ash flow from one of the volcanoes of the San Juan Mountains to the south.
The cache is in a clear plastic container with a green rim. During hunting season (September - November), wear orange and be noisy.
