Drive up a side road off the Lost Canyon Road to a 360 degree view of the surrounding area! A car can make it some of the way with a 1/2 mile hike at the end, but a high-clearance vehicle is necessary to make it all the way. Elevation at the cache is 9000'.
Upper Lost Canyon Road is closed in the spring until May 15th. The Lost Canyon Road (CR 743) is accessible from HWY 135 via CR 10. Take the Lost Canyon Road 4.5 miles to Forest Service Road 3111 (see waypoint chart). The cache is about a mile from the Lost Canyon Road. You can see numerous mountains in the foreground: Crested Butte, Round Mtn, Flat Top Mtn, Red Mtn,Signal Peak, the Palisades of the Gunnison River, and Mill Creek. In the distance, on a clear day, you can see Uncompahgre Peak, Razor Creek Dome, Baldy Ridge, Elk Mtns, Teocalli, Castle, Cathedral, and White Rock Mtn. The cache is on a mesa of Dakota Sandstone, which is the remnant of the Cretaceous Interior Seaway of 65 - 100 million years ago. The sandstone has ripple marks and is burrowed by marine organisms
Cache is in a plastic container with a red top. During hunting season (September - November) wear orange and be noisy!
