Travelinghiker, his Mom, and I backpacked in from the Lower 2WD parking lot on Saturday to South Colony Lakes and stayed overnight before climbing Humboldt on Sunday. Since we didn't get a ride either direction this was a 16.5 mile / 5,350 feet elevation gain weekend. The Garmin was reading 9 feet when I stepped on the flat rock covering the cache and I heard the distinct sound of stone grinding on metal. All looks good with the cache and contents. TFTC

On Saturday, a group of us backpacked the 5 miles from the 4wd trailhead to Lower South Colony Lake and set up camp. Our plan was to climb all three 14ers surrounding the lake and head home Tuesday.
Sunday we hit the trail for Crestone Peak. Going up and over Broken Hand Pass twice was the worst part of the climb. We all successfully scrambled the red gully and made it to the summit. It was a beautiful day but the smoke from several forest fires made the views pretty hazy.
Monday we targeted Humbolt. It was a real easy day compared to the day before on CP. We took our time, spending a while sitting in the wind shelter having a bite to eat. It was breezy and chilly enough to require the shell. None of the others with me are cachers so while they hunkered down in the shelter, I made my way over to GZ. It was a quick find and I signed the log, the first in 2018. Back at the shelter we sadly gazed at the huge plume of smoke from the Spring fire near LaVita Pass, tens of thousands of acres going up in flames.
Tuesday was a great day! We headed back up Broken Hand Pass with Crestone Needle as our target. It was a great scrambling and route finding challenge and it was very satisfying to stand on the summit. After getting back to camp we packed up, made the long slog back to the trailhead, and made the long drive back to NOCO. The best part of the trip home was stopping for real food in Westcliff after eating freeze-dried stuff for the last three and a half days.
Thanks Fozd for keeping this oldie going. It's a great location!!!
(Note, I write this log on 7/4 but dated this log the actual date of the find)

Now that the snow is mostly gone and the weather has settled, I'm back into 14er mode. A few weeks ago, I climbed the Castle/Conundrum combo. This weekend, Humboldt was up first with plans to grab Mt. Lindsey and Mt. Yale the following days. I managed to drive my Forester to within about a 1/2 mile of the upper trail head and the round-trip hike up the standard west ridge was about 12 miles from this point. The views of the Crestones were amazing and the cache was in great shape. TFTC!

Found with Marmot while in the area for my birthday weekend. Saw at least 6 (actual) marmots at the site as well! Very playful and curious about us

Four of us looked for a while but did not find it. Perhaps we needed to enlarge our searching area.

I got a bit of a late start, arriving at the trailhead at 8:00. A friend walked the first 2 miles up the dirt road with me, then I took off on my own for the rest. Storms were scheduled to start around noon. I got to the saddle around 11 and saw the clouds coming over Crestone Needle. Decided to keep going and passed a few people coming down who chose to retreat only a few hundred vertical feet from the top based on what the sky looked like. I kept going and noticed everyone that had been coming up behind me had turned around as well. Nearly at the summit, I couldn't see the saddle below me as clouds had rolled in there. But strangely the sky began to clear and the storms never arrived. With summit photos taken care of, I headed over here and found the cache. Dropped my GPSr down the crevice and it luckily stopped on a ledge within reach, otherwise it would have been gone forever. Beautiful location. Thanks for the cache.
